Amazing song! It'd be worth buying the whole album just for this one, though luckily all the songs are awesome, but this is hands down the best. Anyway, I agree with all the people who think the milkman wasn't actually related to the family and just happened to walk in and see everything. Here's what I think. The father of Billy is definitely the priest, and I think he is also the father of the little boy. If not, the mother had the little one with the boyfriend. She wasn't married to the priest because obviously they're not allowed to marry, and they had to cover everything up because preists are supposed to be completely celibate, if anyone found out he had children, he would be ruined. However, he continues to send child support in secret. The boyfriend is a drunk brute who she only stays with either because he helps pay the bills, she is too afraid to leave, or because he is the father of the youngest child. Anyway, soon after the milkman delivers to their house, Billy wakes up hungover in his truck. I think the little boy stole some gin and got drunk himself and ran after the milkman, and stole his hat. The priest probably normally just sends the money in the mail, but today he came over in person, and was possibly being close to the mother. The boyfriend is drunk, and gets enraged when he sees the mother's real love, and starts choking him, then beating him with a hammer. The mother is too petrified to do anything ("a ghost, too upset to cry"). Billy sees this as soon as he wakes up and throws up, probably a combination of the alcohol and the sight itself. He grabs a still-cold milk bottle, runs in, and demands to know what's going on. The boyfriend claims he was defending the mother, but Billy knows this is bullshit and smashes the bottle on his head, killing him. He realizes the priest is his father and asks why he came over, and the mother shows him the money. He says they need to bury the boyfriend's body and leave the state. At this moment, the drunk little boy has made it back to the house with the milkman's hat, and he seems to be singing in a taunting sort of way, since he stole the guy's hat. The milkman follows him to get the hat back and walks in and sees everything. The boyfriend is dead and the family and priest disappear, and rumors spread throughout the town, everyone telling their own version of what happened. They all get twisted around, and the milkman is the only one left there who truly knows what happened. This would be an awesome movie, or at least a short film or something. I really want to see it. They should at least make a music video. |
