Yea, I caught that, too, moomanmatt. He makes that matrix reference (about taking both pills, one representing acknowledging the world for what it actually is, the other representing a fall back behind the closed curtain and a life in the illusion of main stream... shit), and then, i think, says some stuff about being able to write lyrics with a clear mind. He says it made him clear as a ghost, and the "biter of the throats in the mirror" line is talking about him being see-through or clear (don't vampires (biters of the throat) not have reflections in a mirror?). Then it sounds like he says something about ghost writers (people in the background (clear/ghost) who write lyrics for people in the spot light (the living). And to you guys talking about a sphinx being some dream fairy or something... a sphinx is a statue-esque structure built in old Egyption times in the desert. It has the body of a lion and the head of a pharaoh. google is your friend. |

I'm bored at work... I signed up solely to discuss Lupe lyrics... amazing. When I read the lyrics to the first verse, I get a mental picture of Lupe starring in a mirror speaking to himself, only his reflection is another person with the same face, a "fresh cool young Lu." This new Lupe is moreorless approaching the sell-out, typical superstar that the real laidback, modest Lupe is staying away from. The new Lupe is gassed by all the reviews and all of his fans (us) claiming he's the best rapper *this* best rapper *that*, but the real Lupe doesn't see it that way; the "hype [is] too untrue." Under the pressure, he's fallen to his knees, and he's asking himself "with all this fame and glory, what have I done for myself? Have i improved my flow and continued to explore my love for the music that's made me who I am? Have I forgotten the morals I grew up on that got me where I am today? Cause from all the hype and attention [the guest list], the man I know I am is fading away [he's not on the guest list - where did this new Lupe come from?]." For a second, he gives in like "the more famous [Lupe], you come through" and all the glamor that follows ["and the sexy lady next to you"]. But, he's hesitant. He doesn't know how to be that "fresh cool young Lu." He's "unschooled to the rules" and "too much of a newcomer." He says that this dilemma, trying to choose which life's path he wants to traverse, is a difficult one, and he's battling with it, although he wishes he could take a break from it all. It's all weighing too heavily on his shoulders as the supposed-to-be greatest rapper of all time. The second verse is a warning to this new Lupe if he chooses that life to live. This verse speaks on how, in that life, he's nothing more than a breathe that will inevitably be exhaled, and everyone watching is waiting for his demise. The audiences gaze is powerful and relentless - they're disappointed when Lupe's impending end is delayed. They're [we're] waiting for him to burn out. With that in mind, the third verse is Lupe's asking to return to that from which he came (probably Chicago and the local scene). He's tried that glamor life, and it isn't for him. He wants to go back to the roses and the M&Ms, leaving behind the brand names and papperatzi, however that word is spelled. Fans love him for his music, and not for the drama that he will inevitably attract. He wants to be part of the movement; equal, not a superstar ["Then they all take the stage and start performing for me"]. |
