I think the "virgin eyes" comment is being taken way too literally! Think figuratively. Virgin eyes doesn't mean literally a virgin or losing that virginity -- but losing innocence because of tragedies in life and never being able to look at the world as a wide-eyed child again. I also don't think this is about a single person necessarily, but just about bad events that many people go through. And I think if you combine what most of you are saying, you get the point of the whole song -- which is "life may suck, but if you come through it, you'll be stronger." So here goes line by line: "Pack your bags" -- a woman trying to leave an abusive home. The "lion" is obviously the abuser. And yes, the next bit is most likely about divorce -- signing the papers. "Two line/blue line tragedy" is another bad moment, when a woman finds out she's pregnant with a baby she doesn't want (unplanned, abusive relationship, etc.) "Fire to the metal" i didn't get at first, but I do think it's a drug addiction. It could be telling one person's story from the moment her parents got divorced, how she's now in a bad relationship with a drug addict and finds out she's pregnant -- it's just as easy to separate. Either way, it's about dealing with your past and healing and day by day, you'll find out you're "a little unbroken". |

it could be about anorexia or drugs/alcohol. i instictively thought the latter. I don't think Katie is actually a "little girl" at all. She's probably teens to twenties but she's let some destructive behavior take over her life, yet she refuses to believe it. the line "I have control over me," i think just refers to Katie arguing that like most addicts, she's not addicted. She can handle it, and that it doesn't control her, she controls it, but in reality, that is far from the truth. I see it more of an alcohol reference, and Katie's grown up through a tough childhood (or bad relationship, etc) and she tells people she'll be okay, but is "drowning" herself in the bottle instead -- a downward spiral. |

from what missy's supposedly said on stage and in an interview with the magazine "Cherie," I do think this song is about a girl -- though it could easily be about a guy I suppose. I think the meaning is about starting to fall for someone else after just getting out of another long and/or tumultuous relationship. That's the "him" part -- the new lover is telling her it's okay, you can forget and move on. It's what you need to do. But the new lover is someone the world in general would likely not approve of (hence why I also agree the new lover is a woman) -- "the world ...can tell me I was wrong." ... but they can't conceive what we really mean to each other. They're not there to see it. And then "you're too young to even know, just don't let it grow..." i think regards the new relationship and how most people would believe the narrator is too young to really understand how she feels about this new person (and likely about being in love with another woman - though she knows otherwise). I love this song, and we each interpret based on our own personal lives, so just my idea. |
