The couple fights, she takes the car and speeds off in anger. He gets the night off. She is out on the road trying to figure out what to do. She drives for several hours until she's completely lost. So she has to call him. He doesn't have a map so guiding her home turns into a nightmare. She is an astronomer. And he wants to see her find out what comets, stars and moons are all about. So that when she does, everyone else, astronomers and scientists will just walk away. "Slowly get smaller" He wants specifics on the general idea. He wants to know what he should think. He wants her to show him what to do. The "think-know" and "do-show" flip is just to make it rhyme. He doesn't know what to do so he wants to see movies of his dreams beacuse he can't remember them when he wakes up. And he believes that his subconscience might guide him to whatever he needs to do. Then he wants to see her get stoned on a cloudybreezydesertafternoon. Then he wants to see the afternoon untame itself. (To turn into a storm?) And break it's owner. Which is God? Hmm |

This song is clearly about Doug being depressed and thinking about comitting suicide. "To shut down the whole system at the spine" He's trying to simplify the act of stabbing himself. "It's only a stab in a wet paper bag" But in the end he realizes that thinking about suicide and feeling sorry for himself is just stupid. And singing about wanting to do it is wrong. "I wrote a song. It was slow and long. I wrote the words and the music wrong" So he speeds the song up and shifts it into a brighter mood with a nice and upbeat guitar solo to state that life goes on after all and that he'll get over it. "But life goes on" Possibly one of the greatest bts songs |
