| With Panthrop's interpretation, I agree. This song shares many themes with the movie 'Into The Wild', except without the drugs. In the movie, the guy doesnt want to live the commonly accepted lifestyle, and so goes back to nature. I think the song is about this also, or at least of someone dreaming of doing this, thinking of how shallow is current life is. | |

This song fucking rocks, I'd say maybe the best on BloodSugarSexMagik, or at least tied, anyway. I think most people have the right meanings of it, but I'll just add some stuff. the first two lines, 'There are no monks in my band, There are no saints in this land' refers to the fact that while they are not all good and pure like monks, neither is anyone else, so they shouldn't be judged for what they do. Also, when i first heard this song, i thought the chorus said 'You are all alone' instead of 'You are on the road', until i read the lyrics from the disc booklet and realised that it does sound more like the latter. But at the start of the very last chorus, I'm certain that John sings 'You are all alone' (listen for yourself). This is probably refering to the idea that, while they are sleeping with a lot of different women and always have some company, they are lonely because they don't have any proper serious relationships. Anyway thats my two cents worth, Peace |

| Red Hot Chili Peppers – Subway to Venus Lyrics | 17 years ago |

This song is great, although i disliked it at first; but now in my opinion it's definately one of the best on Mother's Milk. I think this song is just about them playing their music for people, and how its such a great experience and so out of this world; ie, their music is a 'Subway to Venus', Venus being named after the god of love, as there is a lot of love put into their music. Also, the lines 'with honest sounds i'll paint your brain', and 'let my band step inside and take you on a cosmic ride', reinforce this idea. the whole second verse is talking about making the listener want to dance. definately not about sex or drugs as most people have said, or at least not predominantly. ps. this is my first post on this site, I hope you think its good =] |
