I also had to register here for no other reason than to comment on DerUnbequeme's mad-man rantings. I'm also on a train using my blackberry right now, watching for floaters or a treehouse, no luck yet. I think you are putting just a bit too much pressure on this song. Its about an engineer. That's it. Why does it have to be more? Since when does an album name dictate the meanings of a song therein? I can poke so many holes in that theory. How about this; its also on Eponymous! does it mean something different when you hear it along with RadioFreeEurope, finest worksong, or ITEOTWAWKI? (Afraid to hear the Tutonic ramblings of that one!) America has always had a fondness for railways and their lore. (Casey Jones, watch your speed!) This song is just another one. Put your Kids to Sleep? As a father, I read this as " man, another day on the job. I'm goin fast because I want to get home and see the family." This job is his way of supporting his family and being able to put himself and his children to sleep under a roof in an area not known for its wealth. One more thing: I'm right. We're all right. DerUnbequeme, unfortunately you're a bit whacked on this. Perhaps its a language thing. You can't read deep meanings on one side then pick apart the various uses of "can" on the other--especially as a non-native speaker. I mean no disrespect, I'm sure you'd laugh at my perception that Neunundneunzig Luftballoons is just about... Balloons. Tschuss! |
