Slavery, genocide, xenophobia, terror, denial of rights...all the things that the United States was and still is built on; all the things that maintain my relatively privileged position as a white person in this nation. |

It is based pretty closely on the movie. Though I didn't think the movie was very good, this song certainly is! |

It seems to be about one person's heroin use; how it's affected her and how it's affected those around her. |

I don't know if this is REALLY what the song means, but after the 2008 financial meltdown, I like to think of the part of this song referencing quotas and commisions as describing the kind of people who aggressively pushed all the bad loans and sub-prime mortgages which ended up causing the collapse. |

Lyrically, this song reminds me of "Don't Talk To Strangers". Both seem to be about the kind of religious people that tell you you'll end up in hell if you ask questions or exercise your imagination. |

I don't think that the line about "the two that came before" refers to the holy books of the three Abrahamic religions, like yumurt suggested. I took it as the singer referring to the two people the first two verses describe. All in all, I think that the interpretation regarding the song as being about hiding is pretty accurate. |

This song makes me think of someone at the end of their life, yet doing all that they can manage to stave off the inevitable. Not so much from the lyrics, but from the heavy, oppressive feeling of the music. I love this song - I think that this is certainly one of the best songs on the album. |

It seems to be about the part of a city (specifically, I'm guessing Vancouver's Lower East Side) that the rest of the city pushes everything it doesn't want to see into, such as street prostitution and the disposessed. |
