To me this song is about a potential relationship; the feelings you have when you have a big old crush on someone and you can't see why you shouldn't be together. I adore the lines "I've been waiting for a break. How long's it gonna take? Let me love you." Just gorgeous and it rings so true; you can imagine being with someone and have a burning desire in your heart but until they "allow" you to love them by reciprocating your feelings, the relationship can't go anywhere or be real. I think everyone knows the frustration of having a fabulous life with someone playing out in your head but in reality they barely know you're alive. I find this song heartbreaking and adorably charming at the same time. Typical of Joanna Newsom :) |

I'm so in awe of this song, even its early stage. I think there is a strong theme of motherhood here too, and i also get the story of an abortion or the knowledge that the opportunity of having a child was missed. A lot of it also makes me think of a person or couple on the run.. Aside from the obvious last lines i always get a Bonnie & Clyde style image in my head when i hear "Do you remember staring up at the stars, so far away in their bulletproof cars?". Actually, i hear those lines a little different - "Do you remember staring up at the stars, so far away, in that bulletproof car?" then we heard the rushing, floating cape of the dark, dark water and the engine raged" |

It's obviously written from a naive point of view. The storyteller was married or had at least been tied to the guy from when she was 16, she really was just a baby. She fell for the moment and what she imagined love to be. As time goes she realizes this guy doesn't live up to the ideal but she still holds onto it. I love the lines "Who knows what you meant, I only heard what I wanted" Regardless of age or experience i think everyone has gone through that, probably more than once. |

This is pretty much my favourite song in the whole world. Regarding the apparent error with the Meteorite etc - i assume it was fully intentional since Joanna's sister, the astrophysicist and person the song was named after, did the backing vocals. I'm sure she would have made the correction if it was a genuine mistake :) |
