| Dave Grohl is an excellent musician -- perhaps not the greatest ever songwriter, but he manages to express passion and intensity which accentuate the meaning of the lyrics. The fact that he's popular is irrelevant to his abilities as a musician. | |

I disagree with the rest of you. That's the great thing about music is that we can interpret it different ways. To me the song means something different. First of all based on the title "Future Foe Scenarios" I think refers to general anxiety. When they sing "The things we laid do not amount to much, made of abandoned wood, loose stones and such", I think refers to the past, which may be nothing but ruin. Ie: we are built upon our past, and in the end it doesnt matter much. "Who do you work for lately, and does it work for you baby?" refers to now. It may refer to a present entangled situation, working for something involves giving it your effort -- the author is asking the subject if the situation is working for them To me the general meaning is that when things get tough, we might refer to our past (made of abandoned wood and loose stones), but all that matters is the now. Time keeps ticking away, but we 'keep our minds from learning', distracted by the mental chatter and cliches. But when things get tough we realize 'who we work for', where we put our energy into. "Does it work for you lately?" is asking the subject, "if things are this tough, then why do put your effort into this?". It could refer to a relationship or any other entanglement. Again this song is about distraction. "like broken nails and plastic rings will win by keeping me from speaking to my new darling" Refers to unimportant shit that keeps us from greatness. The now is the point of revolution, the point where "the walls are burning", and we have the opportunity to cast away the past and the "Future Foe Scenarios" and assess our current situation. |

The first verse is about the rise of an up and coming star. (Hope and Dreams) The second verse is about a whore who does what she does to live 'the life', but in the end she is slowly getting used. (Loss of innocence) The third displays the singers morality and disgust as he watches these events unfold from the background. Like as if its a road that leads nowhere. (Decadence) The final verse provides commentary about how these 3 stories merge together. "I dont know where i'm going" is the dilemma here. To me, he could join in on the game as its the most immediate option available, or he could try to seek a higher road, something perhaps more ethereal and idealistic than just banging hoes and making money. The chorus segues into these different verses nicely, as after all it is one big story that is told from 3 different view points. In my opinion this is one of P.Diddys darkest songs, but also one of his most beautiful. The piano and bassline is so awesome! |

Awesome song! Some corrections on the lyrics (I listened to the album and the live performance on the lyric parts that didnt seem clear). Try these Stand before the one, as the sky begins to fall -- should be Stand before the world, as the sky begins to fall Screams of pain without the sun, We'll rise again from hell defending -- should be Screams of pain and death descending, Rise again from hell defending |

One of my favorites from Blackbird. "I curse my worth and every comfort That blinded me for way too long Damnit all I’ll make a difference from now on Cause I’m wide awake to it all Cause I’m wide awake to it all" It's about breaking out of your comfort zone because you've spent too long there. Making a difference is a hard thing to do because it requires that. And being wide awake to it all is seeing something that's wrong and making it right. By the way these lyrics "Does anyone care it ain't right what we’re doing? Does anyone care it ain't right where we’re going?" should be: "Does anyone care anyway what we’re doing? Does anyone care anyway where we’re going?" |
