Sally is a thing not a person. Sally is heroin.
Why choose the word cinnamon? coz it's a light brown colour like heroin is in Manchester anyway. Like Golden Brown or indeed Cinnamon Girl by Neil Young. If you read the Cinnamon Girl lyrics you'll see that like in Sally Cinnamon there's the heroin metaphor as a girl.
The first part of the song describes exactly as why people do heroin. |

Yoko Ono on desert Island Discs (UK) talked about beatles heroin use (smoking not injecting, she said). Lots of reference to heroin in the song, but who knows for sure. But please don't start spouting this rubbish that the beatles only did soft drugs. |

This song is not about 'drugs' its about a drug: heroin. There are specific lyrics in the song that refer to heroin and not XTC or any other drug for example.
I agree with the heroin / love metaphor. Heroin is often a woman that takes pain away, like dead flowers by Rolling Stones. |

The song is clearly about heroin. Heroin is a pain killer, so the other girl is a metaphorical one, not one that he's gonna lay.
Simpley put the song contrasts one real girl who is out of the reach of the singer and another girl (heroin) who he forms a bond with instead. |

Great heroin song. Dee dee regretted writing it coz he didn't want to write an 'ode to smack'. There are plenty of odes to smack already, but this has gotta be one of the best. |
