| Broken Social Scene – Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Now I'm not a teenage girl, so I can't relate to it in that way. However, I like the song for it's musical value, and despite the fact that I'm a guy, I like the lyrics a whole lot. The way I see it, the song is from the perspective of a teenage girl, and her best friends has abandoned her to go hang with the "cool crowd." She became superficial and fake in order to join the popular crowd and abandoned who she truly is in order to do so. The girl singing wants her friend to drop the act and hang out with her again, and do the things they used to do together. Another interpretation that could be pretty accurate is that it's from the perspective of a younger sister talking about her older sister. Her older sister is growing up and moving on in life, driving cars, meeting boys, wearing makeup, doing all the things that teenage girls do, and the younger sister is being left behind. She wishes things could be the way they were when they were younger. It's sort of a coming to terms with adolescence, and the younger sister doesn't want to be forgotten by her older sister. I think this song could be interpreted from a number of perspectives, but I think those 2 are the ones I like the best. Great song overall. BSS is amazing. |

| Bush – Swallowed Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I agree with the idea that this song is about drug addiction, but I think it's actually much more than that. The person in the song went down this path of drugs because they wanted to be accepted. He was sick of not living that life that he thought he was supposed to be a part of. He was "loathing for change" and through drugs he found that. But at the same time, he feels like he has been "swallowed" by this culture and these people and no longer feels like himself. I think "heavy about everything but my love" is an indication to that he started this drug habit in order to forget his relationship with his lover or ex lover. He's with "everyone and yet not," meaning that he's among these people but at the same time he feels out of place with them. The drugs put him into his own little world inside his head. The second verse he seems to have a moment of reflection. Even though he wanted to try the drugs and be with this crowd, in the end he just wants to be himself. He references a worm on a fish hook, so I think he's saying that he was baited into this drug culture. In the second chorus when he changes the lyric to "sharp about everyone but yourself," I think that he's saying in his drugged up stupor, he has become aware that he's hanging with the wrong crowd, but through it all he has lost a part of himself. His self esteem has been shattered, and his head is in the wrong place. I don't think that he's on heroin, because he references "black lungs," and I'm pretty sure you inject heroin not smoke it. Finally by the end of the song, he realizes that he needs to get back to the one he loves, and find himself again. He misses his girlfriend, or ex girlfriend, and needs to leave the drugs behind. I think this song is pretty powerful, mainly because I can relate to it a lot. The music video for this song I think gives good insight into what the song is about. Except in the video there is a reference to christianity, because of all of the crosses, so I don't know what that's all about, but maybe God has something to do with this song. Idk, but that's my interpretation of the song. It's just about trying to fit into a dangerous culture of drugs and shady people and losing yourself and the one's you love along the way. | |
| Blink-182 – M+M's Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| the song is called M+M's cuz mark had an old girlfriend named michelle. (mark+michelle) This is my favorite blink song EVER. The song is pretty much about a guy who finds a girl that makes him happy. All he wants to do is spend time with her and be around her as much as possible. But unfortunately for him, this girl doesn't like him as much he likes her. He doesn't want to be the "odd man out", meaning, he wants to be her main man amongst all of the other guys that want her. Its a really great song. Now more than ever I identify with these lyrics. I wish blink had made more albums like their first 3, all of these "high-school themes" seem to have much more impact on my life because they describe my life exactly. | |
| Blink-182 – Dammit Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| this song is simply about being a guy, and getting dumped by your girl. The first verse is about how the guy isn't judging her for breaking up with him. He's sort of accepting it. The 2nd verse is about the guy going back in his mind and wondering where the relationship went wrong. His mind is kind of a mess. The chorus is all about the guy turning to his friends for support, to help him get through the aftermath of the breakup. He sort of realizes that he has to get past the breakup, and sort of take it as another experience, hence, "well I guess this is growing up." Finally, the 3rd verse is about how the guy sees his ex with another guy. He has a little bit of animosity towards her, but he doesn't really show it. He's pretty much over her, so when she decides she wants him back, he won't want to. This song is awesome, it means a lot more to me now, since I just got dumped, and the lyrics basically emulate everything I'm feeling right now. | |
| Nine Inch Nails – Hurt Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| actually, i dont think he is on the verge, i think that in the song "the downward spiral" he killed himself, then this song is the suicide note. so yeah i agree with the last couple of people | |
| Nine Inch Nails – The Downward Spiral Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| this song is about the main character's suicide. The song after this one on the album, "Hurt", is his suicide note. | |
| Nine Inch Nails – Hurt Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The way I see it, this song is about a person who is on the verge of suicide. He tests his feelings by self mutilation. The pain is the only thing he can feel at this point. I think the needle is a reference to drug abuse. The person in the song (not trent) uses drugs to try and kill the pain away, and remove all of his painful memories, yet he still remembers everything. Clearly there was someone incredibly important to him in his life, and he is sort of asking her (im guessing a her), even though he is probably talking to himself, what has happened to him, where did his life all go wrong. At this point he has lost everyone he loves. The next lyric "you could have it all, my empire of dirt" means that he is giving up everything, his empire of dirt references the fact that he feels he has accomplished nothing, and everything of value to him is gone. He doesn't want his life anymore. He feels that he will ultimately just let this friend down, so he is giving this friend up as well. Obviously he has done some things he is not proud of, things that he cannot fix, as alluded to by his "crown of shit" and "liars chair." He is stuck in his room, thinking over all the shit he has gone through, and all the things he has done, while everyone else moves on. As time goes on, his feelings, his will to live, diminishes. Finally, he reflects on how if he could go back in time, and do everything over again, change himself so that he can be happy, he would do it. But he knows he can't, so I think that the climax of the song, with all the distorted noise, is representative of the fact that he took the plunge, and ended his life. This is one of the saddest songs I have ever heard, but at the same token it is also one of my favorite songs of all time, especially because in some ways, I can relate to this song, so it has great signifance to me. | |
