Ooops I forgot to point out-- he is quick to say that he has left her colder now, and that she's warming in the sun. And I must pose a question... the line, "naked by your side is the one place I never lied?" do you guys think this is literal.. or figurative in the sense that maybe he regrets lying, and that when they were intimate, that's when truth was told? :-) Cause that would seriously make my heart smile even bigger. |

I agree with thirdeyeblind31... seems to me he screwed up big time, and let this golden girl go away. According to the legend of Persephone above, everyone loved this girl and wanted her to themselves. Why would such a golden girl mess up? :-P Personally, I think this song is his way of accepting that he messed up-- "This is not my place to stay" , he knows he is not welcome, and to numb the pain, he's smoking the cigarettes. This girl-- likely Charlize Theron-- brought out the best in him-- to go with the season metaphor, she was his spring/summer :-) My favorite line is definitely "And all that I can give you Is an open door And it all it swings too lightly I won't be through there anymore" It reminds me of a relationship I know of where the girl is always there for the guy to make him happy, be a shoulder to cry on; help him-- but on the contrary, he rarely pulls through for her. Applying that, I think the line, "and all I can give you is an open door" signifies that the guy realized he failed, and sees that the best thing for his girl is to move on and leave their relationship- via the simple act of passing through the open door. He doesn't want her to go, but knows that he has hurt her enough. Perhaps it "swings too lightly" because she moves through effortlessly; she has had it, and quite possibly no longer wants to be there for him. And the line, "I won't be through there anymore" means that once she leaves the open door, if she wants to come back, he won't be there-- because he realizes she's too precious and deserves far far better than he can offer. |

While my favorite songs changes based on my mood (other than the number one spot which will always belong to "Motorcycle Driveby"), this song without a doubt makes the top five. At first, I enjoyed it because it was catchy, and never failed to put me in a good mood. Then, I really started to listen to the lyrics, and realized it was DEEP. Originally, I did not understand what Stephan was saying with the lines concerning Icarus and swan songs. And it bothered me, because I felt I had a good grasp on everything else pertaining to this song. But, coming onto this site and checking the lyrics (which was a lot earlier than this date indicates-- I have since made multiple accounts due to forgetting passwords and what not) opened my eyes and I totally had one of those "aha!" moments... and I get it... and I'm excited that I get it. And I'm so excited that I'd say that if I had to sum up my philosophy on life in one song, I'd use this one. "I never believe that things that they happen for a reason And they never go as planned I wanted to thank you for a vision that was lost that you returned But you're past where you understand...." The only thing I disagree with is Stephan's line, "I never believe" I'd say, "I HAVE TO BELIEVE that things they happen for a reason, they never go as planned." And then I love: ...Time it passes and it tells us what we're left with We become the things we do Me, I'm a fool, spent from defiance yeah you got me but I didn't give up on you icarus is not a tee shirt or a swan song, no He is born again and It's not easy being me but I can't promise I will mend Or bend when you believe That we are fixed now from our birth And I've just fallen back to earth Still you know I'll try again Cause I believe that we are lucky We are golden We have stolen manners in the days when we were one." The part about Icarus is my favorite. I feel the gist of the song is saying that he doesn't believe their relationship-- much like the swan song on the t-shirt, and the significance of the swan song, that it refers to a band's last hoorah-- has had *its* last hoorah. He is going to give her his all, and look right into that big sun of their relationship, and risk falling back to earth time and time again. And this is my philosophy-- not only pertaining to a roadblock to a relationship-- but in general, pertaining to a goal you have, or a belief you believe strongly in. Despite trials, push through... stare at your goal, your sun so to speak, and persevere. :-) |

| Come to think of it, this song would make a beautiful apology. Reading yi49's comment about how the song was written for his ex-wife who drove a Camaro, makes me think that it was his way of apologizing to her? His way of wishing their marriage may have been salvaged? | |

Essentially, he wishes to be remembered... preferably for something good. I get the feeling he screwed up significantly, and wants to be trusted again. I think the most brilliant lines are : "I wish I was the pedal brake that you depended on, I wish I was the verb 'to trust' and never let you down" At any rate, beautiful lyrics. :-) |

"Without a doubt about revisting someone you have intense feelings for only to be spurned over and over. Constantly seeing the good in a relationship when there's little to be seen. Unrequited Adoration, pure and simple." I LOVE this interpretation. This song is BRILLIANT. Makes me alive and infinite. MY FAVORITE OF ALL TIME, hands down. |

Decessus, I always interpreted "goodbye" in the simplest terms- as in, the simple act of hanging up the phone. "I don't want to say goodbye to you in this conversation, on this phone but wow, you're tempting me to want so much more than just to talk to you; you're making it hard to be faithful." He loves talking to this girl from the past, but knows it may not be the healthiest situations. My guess is the singer and the ex are security nets for eachother, and despite unsolvable differences, still believe somewhere they *could* work; they just don't want to hurt nice people (their respective current significant others) in the process. |

Couldn't have summarized it better-- "But you and I made our choices all those years ago. Still I know I 'll hear your voice, and see you down the road." Ahhh, soo good. Some people you just can't get past. |

I like austinrita's interpretation :-) But I can see it in a different light too... It's almost like she is manipulating him; stringing him along so to speak. IE-- "I'm not hip to all your tricks, your algebra, your politics." Buttt the tell-tale line for me is when he says, "I have confidence issues with your intentions." To me, this says he can't trust her. But he still wants her... Oh my, does he want her. And I get the feeling he'd do anything for her-- but can only do so much, because of her manipulation, and the fact that for whatever reason, she won't let him in. So, instead of putting up with her nonesense-- he just is there, willing to wait. Hence MY MOST FAVORITE LYRIC of the song, "Standing annonymous, hoping your heart will just wake up and ask for me by name. Maybe someday it will ask for me by name-- just not today." |
