I agree with ukdean, i think this song is about a lover too I think it may be about Bianca Casady (Coco of Cocorosie). they dated for a while and i believe they broke up around the time Devendra was probably writing/recording this album. Bianca and Devendra both like to play with the concept of gender. Bianca usually draws a mustache on herself and Devendra in dresses. So i think the line "You'd help me zip up my dress" refers to the fact that they embraced and encouraged this deviance of gender norms in each other. Another reason i think this is about him ending his relationship with Bianca is this line "you had remained your child still born with no name. " Bianca refers to herself as Stillborn (see 3rd CD of cocorosie :Adventures of ghosthorse and Stillborn) I'm not sure what he is refering to with this line:"Happened nearly every night your own flesh & blood. " but i think the "own flesh and blood" may be refering to Bianca's sister Sierra Casady (the 2nd half of Cocorosie) they are very close sisters so same "flesh and blood "could apply here. Ultimately i think this song is about the ending of a relationship that began simply with such promise and thoughts of limitlessness... i"m not quite sure of what he is alluding to specifically with his lines and maybe only Bianca would. This song is so sad tho and it truly is a shame they didn't last together. Bianca seemed like a better match than natalie portman atleast. Anyways that my take on this song. Maybe someone else sees the connection to the casady girls and can elaborate more |

| Elliott Smith – No Confidence Man Lyrics | 17 years ago |

As easy as it is to point out obvious imagery (i.e. drug paraphinillia) I am gonna give elliott a little more credit than : this is a song about drugs theeee end. I think this song explains his progression to drugs. Elliott didn't do herion during the time period of this song and p.s. he didn't shoot up, he smoked it HOWEVER i don't even think that matters really. this song is obivously about Charlie, his stepfather but it illustrates the dire effects his stepfather had on him: Elliott said that Charlie sexually molested him so i think the rubber loop has 2 meanings -First I think it alludes to a condom especially coupled with the lyrics "i'm the man you really want so just act natural..." -secondly i think that this rubber loop also represents drugs but coupled with the previous statement, presents the result of his experiences with charlie rather than just being about drugs I think he also deals with the physical abuse in this song but since there was such a fuss about this rubber loop i thought i would give my two cents. And i think it being called "no confidence man" is describing elliott himself.... maybe as a result or because he never took a stand... Anyways, i don't think this song is just about drugs and for all of you who do, comeon please put a little more thought into your comments... |

Tooo many comments so maybe someone already mentioned this, but this song seems to parallel themes from Sylvia Plath's poem, Daddy. They both deal with the "electra complex" which i know lots of poetry/lyrics do, but whats most interesting is that both compare these poisonous lovers to vampires. "Another Western vampire different time same place" ,. really made me think that there may be some type of connection. I recommend you read the poem ...i'll post the last two stanzas here but its easy to find on the interenet, so decide for yourself: If I've killed one man, I've killed two-- The vampire who said he was you and drank my blood for a year, Seven years, if you want to know. Daddy, you can lie back now. There's a stake in your fat black heart And the villagers never like you. They are dancing and stamping on you. They always Knew it was you. Daddy, daddy, you bastard, I'm through. Bianca seems to be very interested in poetry so maybe she was influenced by sylvia plaths poem....just a thought |

I really love this song too. I think this song is about becoming jaded about relationships but, even more so, craving broken relationships . Even the way it is sung and the tune are, although beautiful, very dull, dreamy and lacking enthusiasm...a sense of hopelessness. "Love grows a fear Suites your taste of bitter ends But this stake that holds you in Leaves no place to begin" The subject (she?) is drawn to failed love but hates it at the same time. This makes it impossible to have a relationship with her because she is not only unforgiving due to past lovers (no mercy) but the singer just doesn't have any more will to fight anyways thats my take on it but all in all, great song and i love the lyrics |
