Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 17 years ago
I think all of you are absolutely right.

You have to remember the picture from Delacroix as the cover. That is a very important part of the real meaning of this song.

"Viva la Vida", or "life is well done". In other words, I think the meaning of this whole song is "what goes around, comes around". I think he uses so much images to Christianity, Napoleon, the french revolution and such to bring us into a "general mood", a "general idea" behind that album. It is a very political/philosophical album. They want to give it an "epic journey" feel (Who knows, maybe it's becoming a father that makes you open your eyes like that).

I think the "general idea" behind this album and this song is that "Everything is gonna be alright".

Kings are just humans after all, they fall and they will suffer the consequences of their acts. That can be true for Bush, Napoleon, the french artistocracy, etc.

Remember, always, you might want to rule the world, have an effect on everyone, have everyone want to be at your place, but once you're at the top, it does not mean that you'll not have to answer for your acts: St-peter might not call your name into heaven, or in non-christian words, you might have to face your own conscience.

Life is well done. All that goes up, must come down.

To add to what I've said also before, there's a few details we could add to this song:

1) Maybe the snow he is talking about is not really snow but more like residues from an explosion of some kind, like a missile hitting a building or something like that.

2) When he says: " I took my love down to Violet Hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still"

I think he's either talking about his little child, or simply a letter he receives from home, from far away. It could be a letter from his loved one and he's in Afghanistan (Or Iraq? But the first snow in Iraq was in january, not december), reading it, sitting in the snow that I stated in the first page, from december 4th, and he hopes this is not for the worst and that he does this for the right reasons.

Dont remember the painting on the cover of this single (or album?). It's Eugene Delacroix’s 1830 painting Liberty Leading the People.

This is a political song.

This is what I think the whole song is about:

Timeline of Afghanistan (December 2001)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monday, December 3, 2001
News reports state that Australian, British, French, German and Russian special forces are on the ground in Afghanistan in addition to U.S. special forces and marines.

Regarding the snow, this is what happened in Afghanistan, on december 4th 2001:

First snow warns of humanitarian disaster

Aid hampered by weather, bandits and infighting

Tuesday December 4 2001

The first heavy snowfalls of what looks like becoming a very cruel winter blanketed northern Afghanistan yesterday, imperilling the lives of hundreds of thousands of people at risk from cold, hunger and inadequate shelter and raising fears of an impending humanitarian emergency.

Here are the links:

The rest of the song is mainly a social critics. As we all know, the US are becoming more and more religious and the line between religion/state are becoming thinner. The purpose of churches now is to make profit, and banks are becoming places of worship, that means that MONEY is becoming what we all believe in: The Oil War (Iraq War), and etc.

Yes, I think it's something like a soldier that is realizing what's happening and has a "wake up call", asking his family (father, girlfriend, etc) to help him out.
