| M.I.A. – Paper Planes Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Seeing as how M.I.A. was born to a Tamil Tiger, and has had to switch from Sri Lanka to the UK and back again several times, her messages are always politically charged. Personally, when I look at the lyrics of M.I.A.'s songs, they are all politically charged. She writes from the viewpoint of a citizen of a lesser developed country's point of view, aimed at an audience of the world's richest and most mis/uninformed. In my opinion, her lyrics speak about the state of lesser developed countries. As she states in $20, $20 might not seem like a lot to us in the United States, the UK, Canada, etc. etc., but in Sri Lanka, or a lesser developed, African country, people will strive day and night, doing whatever means are necessary to get by. Whether that would be selling drugs to afford your shanty, or stockpiling $20 AK-47's to finance your battle for autonomy. Seriously, look at the conflicts in sub-Saharan Africa, and South-East Asia (especially Sri Lanka, her country of birth). Examine her lyrical content. You will see the connections. |
