"The Sonoma" = the sonoma valley. Gideon is NOT the narrator (the lead singer is-Craig)///Doesn't Holly = Hallelujah= the hood rat friend ("Holly was a hood rat, now you finally know that...") I think it fits, by and large. Of course, the lyrics are pretty layered so it makes things harder to unravel. |

Yes, the song is used by Amnesty International, maybe most prominently on their "Conspiracy for Hope" tour of '86. Yes, it's 'literal' meaning has to do with someone falsely accused (or is he really guilty-oh Bob, we'll never know, will we?!)....but you are all such LITERAL boys and girls...the song probably has more than 1 meaning, don't ya think? It is Dylan, after all (try and take Desolation Row literally-good luck!)...Think about this- Richard Manual sang this song when they performed together...in '82 he committed suicide after a long, long struggle with alcoholism and depression...Ya think he might have hoped that one day he would be "released" from his afflictions...This song has way more depth when you look below the surface of the words.... |
