The Jam – Eton Rifles Lyrics 17 years ago
During 1978/9 on a Right To Work march from the north to the south as the marchers passed Eton or was it Harrow they were roundly abused by students.Weller wrote The Eton Rifles as a direct reaction to that .The lyric thought you were clever when you lit the fuse tore down the house of commons in your brand new shoes composed the revolutionary symphony then went to bed with a charming young thing,is apparently a dig at The Clash

Madness – The Prince Lyrics 17 years ago
Big fans of Prince Buster Lee wrote a tribute to him including references to him not to mention play on words around PB songs.
Orange Street is not only a song by PB(108 Orange St)but also the address where PB had his shop named Prince Buster's One Stop, add to this Ghostdance and Earthquake again two PB singles it's the perfect tribute.
It's also about how at the time they thought that there was this great street in downtown Kingston which was throbbing with the latest ska sounds and no matter how hard they tried they'd never get there as it was so far away.
i seem to remember PB sued the band for royalties as it sounded like another of his songs.

Ps the lyric is 'oh yes i still sway to the beauty queen nothing at one time could tell or tear us apart, make me a deal and i'll take you there love was the drug that finally made you despair.
Which contains references to Virginia Plain(make me a deal),the love was the drug that nearly made him despair is a direct reference to the single LITD and how his break up with Jerry Hall nearly sent him over the edge.

A tribute to Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry, with direct lines about him,Oh yes i still sway to the beauty queen,BQ is a beautiful song off the Roxy Lp For yr Pleasure, the term space age group is Lee Thompson's description of what Roxy looked like when he 1st saw them on TOTP as no one looked liked them it was like they'd been beamed down from space.
There is also another verse which goes 'you left us stranded with a hungry crew did you expect us to gain respect for you?i'm sure you did'nt mean it i know you did'nt scheme it'.
The song should've been on the 1985 LP Mad Not Mad but was omitted for some reason, maybe cos in part it sounds uncanily like another Roxy song called 'Out Of The Blue'
It then later surfaced on The Ill fated 1988 Lp The Madness

David Bowie – Young Americans Lyrics 17 years ago
It is'nt 'look at yr hands ache,it's actually look at yr hands shake, which is a reference to drugs, if you think about it the line before is mama's got cramps(also on Dick Cavert show he acts this out whilst singing).
As for the 'i read the news today oh boy' it was Luther who actually put that line in infact i think it was him who actually thought of the whole 'Young American young american backing vocal part.He is quoted as saying he was invited to the studio by his friend Ava Cherry and when he heard the playback of YA he instantly started vamping on young american young american he was the young american,DB heard him and said that sounds great we've got to put that in and the rest is history
