you have to start with the line before that: "no one's so sure if her crime had a reason" - they're not sure why she killed her husband "but reasons, like seasons, they constantly change" - she has a ton of reasons, they just keep piling on more and more "and the seasons of last year, like reasons, have floated away" - every time a new issue arrises it takes precedent over the last problem she had with her husband, and now that she's killed him, all of the anger and reasons she had to kill him are leaving her because she's finished what she wanted to do. hope that helps |

I think the story of China White and China White II is that this little girl's mother dies, and the father uses her remains to fertilize his garden. In China White, he's warning himself that he might harm his daughter (referenced in China White II), and so he's basically asking himself to commit suicide in order to both prevent her death as well as any harsher judgment from "the old man and his son", which I believe to be God and Jesus. I think, though, at the end of China White, he's already killed the daughter and is now going to use her to help his garden grow as well... I think he kills the daughter because the loss of his wife (her mother) is extremely painful for him, and like it it stated in China White II, she looks like both of them so her physical appearance is a constant reminder that he just can't handle. I think China White and China White II convey two conflicting pieces of his personality, and while both of them occur at the same time, the personality of China White succumbs to that expressed in China White II... it's a little confusing but EXTREMELY clever, one of the most brilliant ideas I've ever attempted to dissect. I think it relates to real life in the sense that it is a metaphor for someone being unable to cope with a loss, therefore they feel the need to destroy every reminder of said loss so that they can "sleep at night"... so by destroying all these memories, they have made the situation "beautiful again", because just as the flowers grow at the gardener's feet, this person feels as though they have regained the power in this situation -- they are no longer vulnerable to this loss. I love both of the China White songs, and I feel a strong connection to them... |

i think this song is definitely about cheating, circa_survive_green. both the girl and boy involved are cheating on their significant others. when he says "we look at shame like a game", he's admitting that they both know that what they're doing is wrong, but it's almost like they want to keep going until they get caught. also, the lines "we'll hold our breaths until they figure out a story we can spin to keep on counting sins" seems to further indicate that they don't really care if they get caught or not, because they'll just lie about it and keep on cheating. neither of them plan on stopping. i mean, even their friends have told them that this is a bad, bad idea... and the girl is just horrible, when she says she "knows a traitor before he even knows himself", what she's basically saying is that she can get any guy she wants, even if he's taken, because she can make anyone fall into temptation. i like this song alright, but it reminds me of something that happened to me, so it makes me really fucking angry. |

I think what he's trying to get at with the lines "I was born a wanted man, but I'll die a sailor's wife" is the dichotomy of the subjects' relationship. Like in the beginning, she was chasing after him like there was a ransom for his capture, and by the end of the relationship, she'd already moved on and left him waiting around for her (sailors traditionally leave their wives and families to go on their little sea voyages, because the sea is their "true love" and even their family can't compensate for their love of the maritime) -- but that's just the thing. he's PLEDGING to die a sailor's wife, almost making it seem like he'd wait around until the death for her, whether she likes it or not... ...Keith is basically a genius, in my opinion. |

it's: we're liberated by the hearts that imprison us we're taken hostage by the ones that we break this is a statement that for me embodies the ironic nature of most relationships. the feeling i gathered from the second line is that when we leave someone and hurt them, our experiences and mistakes will haunt us forever. we can never get back what we once had, and therefore we can never let it go. yet, on the other hand as expressed in the first line, we feel especially carefree and detached when we have a relationship, when someone has control over our hearts. it's the dichotomy that is most relationships, if you can understand what i'm trying to convey. |
