I agree with most an interpretations of this song. But I personally relate to gyranthir's meaning. I like this song, but musically I can't help but think "A Perfect Circle". |

It's a song about living the life of being in a band/musician/rockstar. Possibly cheating with a groupie while your out on the road and making excuses to your girlfriend/wife. Lying to her in a sense, "It's so lonley without you, but I can't afford for you to come with me.." when obviously the person (be it Buffett or a fictional character) is making enough money that he can now fly from gig to gig and have some fun after each show. He visits home on breaks and repeats the cycle when the tour starts again. I would imagine he's chilling at the hotel pool/beach thinking about the night before eating Grapefruit to stay skinny, chewing juicy fruit to "wash away the night". Which may be symbolic for washing away his sins. |

people make mistakes, it's human nature. But he's saying, "no matter whatever mistakes I've made, you ain't seen nothing yet" because if your going to make that one "big mistake" you might as well do it right!
I saw Tim Fite open for Les Claypool in Houston and it was like the first time I heard the Talking Heads.. That feeling of unique talent.....until the weed and Sudafed kicked in, but that's another story for another time. ;) |

It's a glimpse into his life at that moment. He was a musician making good money, renting a house on the beach in Key West and partying like a rock-star at the local bars. Not really concerned about the impending hurricane blowing in. As I would imagine most residents of the Keys wouldn’t be concerned about it either. You have to reason with them in your head it’s the price you pay to live in there and you accept it. He woke up with a hang over and needed the hair of the dog, so he went to the bar and ordered a vegetable drink with vodka to get moving. So he’s walking around, enjoying life, probably feeling the wind of the hurricane coming in and working up a good buzz when he experienced something that inspired a song idea. He knew he had to get it on paper quickly. He had probably forgotten some really good song ideas and regretted not writing them down at the time, but he was partying and of course, didn’t remember them the next day. So he sat down on the beach and wrote out exactly what he did and experienced that day, put it with a catchy tune and CHA-CHING!! See ya later Hurricane season, I’m going to Paris! He’s either excited or complaining about the airplane ride. I would guess a little of both..
The cleaning out could represent Alcohol, drugs or living in Key West during the hurricane season. But it’s what he needs to clear his mind, relax and take a break from living the rock-star life. It charges his batteries. |
