One iterpretation of this song could be that its about an ambitious woman getting married and having to settle to becoming a housewife. She started of being successful in her job and 'moving up the ladder', then she falls in love, gets married and she finds herself in a housewife role.
I see this song from the perspective of an outsider or a friend of hers commenting on this transition and tells of how know that she is not happy. |

i watched 'meeting people is easy' back in 2003, and this song came up, which was done in 1998, and i became obsessed with it since. i think the version played back then was better coz it used keyboard/organ. but the point is, this song really has someting special about it, i believe, as in it seems to bring out alot of feelings from people who interpret the song in their way |

To me, i think now it's about someone convincing themself not to have feelings for someone, when they actually do, and thus going into a denial. this because they know that they would become vunerable and liable to being hurt.
the first line is like a mantra to themself.
the second line about painting themself white and fill with noise suggests that they are doing what they can to erase all these thoughts and try replace with anything but.
all in all the song is about being afraid of being hurt emotionally by someone, and the sexual frustration it creates. |

'You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking' awesome lyric to a song! Also I interpret this song as describing how one longs for something so much, and the way they feel about what it would be like, but when they get it they realise they don't actually feel anything at all, which leaves a certain emptiness. one of the lines describes how people just fill up their lives with stuff just to fill the void. |

might b wrong, but i defenatly get a 9/11 vibe from this song, especially with the new york connection with james murphy. there are references to it being in the morning like which was when it took place. and the telephone call where somethings wrong sounds like the messages people left to their loved ones from the plane before it crashed. also it was sunny on that day too hence reference to lovely weather. anyways, those were my thoughts on the song.. |
