I think this song is a rather depressing reflection about the course of a human life... Raising a child and being careful they don’t end up just like yo, faults and all...Growing up and being in those young, crazy, lively relationships and then knowing disillusionment and desperation.. Depression and loneliness...Beginning to question the point in it all. Clarity and wisdom comes with age.. Your life is intricate and beautiful, but just a speck among many others.. like sand. Illusions and delusions will be shattered..Love in all its forms is an entirely subjective experience, I.e. “that’s your fault”. The temple is your life.. a beautiful thing inside of you, full of dreams..The money lenders are the harsh dissapointments of reality. Circus tigers are kept in cages.. as are we in so many ways.. and it’s utterly heartbreaking. Our wild lives are reduced to history books and poems and lyrics and obituaries. I think Connor came from the point of view of quite a cynic in this song, and his conclusion in all these observations of life is this: In the end, all you can do in this great illusion is enjoy all you can while there’s time.. Take that trip.. buy that ice cream cone. Gratefully cherish the memories and really live to the fullest, because in the end you’ll fall asleep forever, and all of it will be gone (“it did not happen”). I believe there’s also heavy reference to Ego dissolution via psychedelic drugs in this song. |

A few years back, I heard this song for the first time on the long drive home from a friend’s house... one I happened to be head over heels for. The feeling wasn’t mutual. It was a beautiful night in late summer and there were nothing but farms and back roads in sight. I felt happy and empty/disappointed at the same time. The mood was similar to driving back home to your boring town after a long vacation at the beach. This song fit the mood perfectly. I’ve always felt like this was about him singing to a girl who was crazy about him but he never felt the same. I can’t seperate myself from that bias. |

i've had this experience more times than i would've wished to. i don't know if it's just about him not feeling the same... but i think maybe conor is just numb... doesn't know how to love or at a certain point just gave up on it because he got hurt too much or is disillusioned in some way.. so he can't return the feelings. |

I can see the resemblance between this and "Crystal Japan". It only sounds like Koyaanisqatsi because the first 3 notes in the song are similar to A Warm Place. Koyaanisqatsi = creepy, btw. |

"8. Made a list of all person we had harmed and became willing to make AMENDS to them all.
9. Made direct AMENDS to such persons, except when to do so would injure them or others."
Those are two of the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonynmous (and other recovery programs). As a part of the program, it is suggested that the recovering person "make amends" to those they hurt in any way during their drinking/drug use, etc. Obviously, if a person killed someone while they were under the influence, (i.e. drunk driving), they can not verbally apologize to someone who is dead. Also, most people who take sobriety seriously will improve many facets of their lives and personality, often becoming better people. This applies to the analogy of being "reborn" and wearing a halo, as if an angel. It seems to me that the person writing these words found something wrong with those who are accepting of the amends of recovering addicts who took lives. This personal seems resentful. This song seems quite personal.
Everyone is open to their own personal interpretation. Since songs lyrics can be ambiguous, there won't always be a common agreement. For me, I watched these words play out with my own two eyes. I lived those words, so I have no doubt that that's what it means to me. |
