| Personally, I believe this song is NOT about how a girl fell in love with the wrong guy. I believe this song is about a girl who meets a man who saves her life. She has problems to work through and salvation comes to her in the form of this man who really loves her. The repetition of "he doesn't look a thing like Jesus" clearly means that she was not expecting this salvation (something Jesus gives if you're religious) to come from him. Maybe he was a friend at first? The first verse even says it explicitly "a beautiful boy to SAVE you from your old ways". Also the repetition of the line "when you were young" points to a deep-seated issue that took root during her early life. This issue is the roadblock to having a serious and intimate relationship with one another, hence the uncertainty of the girl in the second verse ("can we climb this mountain?..."). | |

I don't know if anyone has had this take yet, but to me this song is about a man who is in love with a broken woman, someone who had been in an abusive relationship before, and this man is dealing with all the hardships that come with that. In the beginning, she begs him not to miss her. For many reasons, this woman is probably petrified of another relationship, so she tries to steer away from them. By the end, he's found out why she is so distant and removed, so reluctant to let him get to know her. But that's just what I get out of it. Personally, I relate to this song because I've been through this. My interpretation is colored by my own experience so regardless of what the song was intended to mean, this is what it means to me. In addition, I agree with ledhotzepper on the genius of the song, it is poetically and musically elegant and it's a shame that most of us don't appreciate or search for that in modern music. |

I agree with PinsNeedles, however I feel there's more to it than that. The title says it all: the Jeopardy of Contentment. The song is about that period in a relationship after everything becomes too comfortable. To me, it's about what's at stake when a relationship reaches that point, when the flame is gone and we settle for contentment instead of true happiness. Indeed, the lyrics describe a relationship where the partners no longer relate, where they've been through a lot together but the relationship just isn't what it used to be: "In our destroyed machine". The narrator (for lack of a better term) here still loves their partner but feels that the relationship just isn't strong enough anymore to last. They want something better for their partner and decide to make the sacrifice of ending the relationship in hopes that the other person will find what's best for them "there's got to be something better out there, someone better out there for you than me". Its about giving up before there's any more damage. |

It's definitely about the loss of innocence, and the transition from childhood to adulthood. Its about how through the process of maturity, we've lost track of the things that really matter and what makes us who we are. Indeed most people reach a certain point in their life when they don't know who they are anymore. We get so mixed up with every day life that we don't take the time to feel a connection to anything anymore, and no one tries to change this feeling, or bring back the optimism of childhood; we dismiss it and live with it. We decide that because childhood is gone we must bid goodbye to everything that comes with it: imagination, optimism, ignorance and optimism. Or at least thats what I get out of it. I realize that everyone's already discussed the meaning of this song but I just wanted to put my two cents in. |

okay, the only thing i have to say is my interpretation of the lines: a monument of crisis - eye strikes this - your dead line my nest with your soul -- cleansed in bloodshed she's basically talking about the war. the line "cleansed in bloodshed" makes me think genocide, as in the war in Iraq. You know, religious cleansing and whatnot? the line is a paradox--it's criticizing the meaning of genocide. How can you "clean" your country when all your doing is making a bigger (and bloodier) mess that you'll have to clean up later? as for "your dead line my nest with your soul" i think that she is once again calling out her shadow soldiers, inviting them to think for themselves--not what the media tells them to think. And i definetly agree completely 100% with suttiecat in the fact that she's trying to "resurrect" our infected minds and bring enlightenment to us all. This song is meant to change the way you think about the world and it definetly does just that. I also agree with suttiecat on the fact that the universe is so much bigger than all of us and our hateful human nature has become us and will ultimately destroy our world as we know it (i.e., WMD'S) Otep is amazing! this song kicks so much ass i can't even bring it into words! |

it's true...the lyrics do kinda suck but i like the flow of the music and "stand up, strike back, speak out" is my anthem. My beliefs about the war are conflicting in more ways than one. I don't like the dying, but the media controls everything you shitheads know about the war and let me tell you their are soldiers who come back home and say "i can't wait to go back" just because of all the good things that are happening for the commoners of iraq. i mean, COME ON PEOPLE!!!
