Melanie C – Never Be The Same Again Lyrics 7 years ago
This song was on the first solo album by an ex-spice girl.

My interpretation of this song is that this is the point when the spice girls change. When they all started going their own ways, and the fact that whilst in the future they might get back together again, that initial "Spice Girl" moment will never be the same again.

George Ezra – Cassy O Lyrics 7 years ago
@[42:27276] steps I get the impression the song itself has two meanings and yes I was wondering the same thing yesterday when I was playing it on Singstar. I'd only ever noticed the chorus before yesterday but listening to the lyrics I think he is referring to a Casio - as in either a Casio watch or a Casio keyboard. There are references in the verses to time which make me think of him being on about a watch such as...

"maybe I'm chasing time"

"Well, I got my tracing paper, so that I could trace my clock
And the bastard face kept changing, and the hands, they wouldn't stop
I was ripping out the battery, I received myself a shock
And to add insult to injury, I could still hear tick and tock"

All Casio watches are battery operated, except the kinetic watches, and I'm quite sure Casio was the first company to produce a kinetic watch - so if you took the battery out of a kinetic casio you would still hear tick and tock.

"Well, I traveled to Australia
And I traveled there by train
This something might sound strange to you
But on the way I gained a day"

Again another reference to time - if you travel to Australia at the right time you could potentially gain a day due to the time difference, also quite a few Casio watches do have world clocks on them

And finally

"Inspector, fix me, my Cassy O's burnt out
We're losing memories that I can't replace"

This line could actually be referring to some of the other things that Casio make - because Casio not only make watches (even though they're probably most famous for making both watches and musical keyboards), Casio also make projectors - the fix me line could be about him asking someone to fix his Casio, and the burnt out could be referring to a Casio projector that the bulb has burnt out on. The losing memories line could also be about the digital cameras that Casio used to make (I don't know whether they still make them - but I know years ago one of my first digital cameras was a Casio) also Casio did incorporate some of their digital cameras into their watches - I used to have one of the Casio digital camera watches - only problem was the battery was always going on it!

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark – Walking on the Milky Way Lyrics 8 years ago
The whole song seems to be about falling in love. The first verse is about him meeting someone at seventeen and by twenty one they were happily in love with each other. Towards the end of the verse it seems that they were splitting up - as he says about not believing in destiny, love or anything being enough

The chorus that mentions walking on the milky way and going to venus - venus is supposed to be the God of love so it's the imagination of this perfect marriage going all the way to Venus.

Then the second verse is the person then looking back, even though at the beginning the marriage seemed perfect, over time reality has destroyed what you hoped the marriage would grow into, and there is nothing left but memories (shadows on the wall), and the person who they've now split up with seems to want to ruin them. But they're saying don't let them ruin you, don't let them see you fall, instead think about how much you've achieved, how far you've gone.

Then the line about not believing in miracles, truth and anything recreating youth - he's saying basically that even though when he was young he thought it was a miracle that he met this amazing person and that the person would always be truthful to him, this wasn't the case, and that nothing will ever recreate that innocence of youth, of believing and trusting the person you marry.

Then in the following verses again he's reminiscing over the time when they first met and they were on the way to the god of Love (Venus), and it was quite a day (the wedding day).

Owl City – Hot Air Balloon Lyrics 10 years ago
I think the entire idea of this song is that Adam Young has an amazing imagination and it's what a lot of us imagine as kids. The entire song is about adventures we have as kids. It's very much similar to Land of Make Believe by Bucks Fizz.

The idea is at the beginning he says that we wrote the prelude to our own fairy tale - which starts by telling us that it's all in his imagination (like his other song about fireflies).

The parachute bit at the beginning might be that they were at a jumble sale and found someone selling an old parachute - possibly one of those large parachutes that kids groups tend to have for kids to play with rather than one that is used for sky divers.

And using that parachute they carried on coming up with more ideas - creating a race track in the house and then going down into the basement.

The next idea is the imagination that they take all these ideas up into the air and imagine themselves travelling across the US in a hot air balloon.

When they mention drinking the great lakes this could be one of two things - this could be that as kids they stopped for a drink of lemonade whilst playing and imagined them from the hot air balloon being the great lakes as from up there the great lakes would look as small as lemonade glasses, or it could be just imagining what the stunning view would be like over the great lakes and the "drinking" is referring to taking in the view.

Of course all the way through this is the realisation that pretty soon they're going to run out of ideas of things they can do with this old parachute and games they can have, so pretty soon they'll have to come back down to earth - or come back down to reality, but until then let's just have a great time imagining all this is happening and having some fun.

Panic! at the Disco – I Write Sins Not Tragedies Lyrics 10 years ago
@[InterlyingAura:2075] Well in the song he wrote about the wife sinning against the groom and causing the two of them to split up before the marriage took place - where as most artists write about tragedies where they've got married and then they split up after they've been married by discovering the truth a few months or years later.

Also one other thing is that the title of some songs don't necessarily have to mean anything about the song - Gorillaz did Clint Eastwood and what on earth does "I'm happy felling glad, I got sunshine in a bag" have to do with Clint Eastwood, or what does 19-2000 have to do with anything at all.

Panic! at the Disco – I Write Sins Not Tragedies Lyrics 10 years ago
At the beginning it seems the groom is in the church with a bridesmaid and a waiter getting waiting for the wedding to begin.

He overhears the two of them talking together about how nice the wedding is, but the waiter says it's a shame that the groom's bride is a whore - so he must know that the bride has possibly been unfaithful to the groom - either that or it's just a rumour that's going around that might not be true.

In the chorus he then tells the pair of them off for sending rumours like this around which could destroy the marriage, and if they're not true it'll be a shame to destroy such a relationship, and the bit about closing the god damn door is saying haven't you ever heard about keeping rumours in the closet and not shit stirring before the wedding to break him and his wife to be up.

The next verse is him saying well I suppose look at this way your rumours have technically saved our marriage - because either he gets the chance to call the whole thing off because he can't trust his wife any more which means he never gets married at that point so the marriage is technically saved because he doesn't find out about it six months down the line and end up splitting up anyway, but then he's like forget it then let's just have a big party and a celebration that he didn't mistakenly marry someone who's been sleeping around.

But he's still kind of annoyed about them for spreading these rumours and wouldn't it have been kind of better had they never said anything. So he is relieved, but also annoyed that things haven't gone to plan, of course he's more annoyed about his bride for being such a whore than them but at that instance he is kind of taking it out on them - as what generally happens when marriages are broke off at the last minute by rumours flying around, until the rumours are proved.

C+C Music Factory – Things That Make You Go Hmm Lyrics 11 years ago
The entire song is about people getting caught out in different situations and the other person thinking - hmm.... there's something not quite right with this situation.

The first one - his girlfriend asked another girl to go round and see if he'd go with another girl other than her and be unfaithful, but he wouldn't do it, but she went too far and his girl walked in the room, and he finds out this was all a set up to see if he was faithful, so now he's thinking hmmm.... why does my girlfriend not trust me?

The next one - he'd met a girl and gone out with her. She told him that he was the first boy she'd ever met and gone out with. His friend thinks really she's been around the town, so he asked her wasn't it me that took your virginity - and her response is really strange 'cos it's "why do you guys always ask that?" - so hmmm... has she slipped up because if he was the first why would she know other guys have asked that!

The third one is an example of girls who have a man who it appears is having an affair 'cos he's disappearing off, having strange phone calls, and someone is buying him classy things, and the girl is thinking hmm... something doesn't quite add up, can't believe he's cheating but he must be.

The KLF – Last Train to Trancentral Lyrics 11 years ago
Actually quite a lot of The KLF's songs did have meanings, but most of them were hidden meanings. If you look into the history of The KLF you'll find that many of their lyrics came from putting their own take on the Illuminatus Trilogy books.

I thought though Trancentral was Liverpool, one of Drummonds main places and where him and Jimmy got together.

Justified and Ancient was about the mu mu tribe asking for a Flake '99 ice cream (they also hid easter-eggs in the releases for example the release code on a certain version of J&A is CHOC-ICE1 and the inner label on the records also had random messages), and one song which isn't on this site - It's Grim Up North - mentions all the different places in the north that they used to hold raves at.

Jon Hare – War Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is taken from the computer game Cannon Fodder.

The meaning behind the song refers to the game..

In the game you play as a group of soldiers all trying to fight the enemy. The whole game is kind of a spoof on some of the world war type games.

This did annoy the Royal British Legion, and was considered to be disrespectful as the game also featured the poppy symbol throughout.

This is where the line "War! Never been so much fun" came from as the game was a joke version of war.

The software company that made the game was actually called Sensible Software and despite their name they did make a number of spoof games including Sensible Golf, Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder.

The bit about "Go to your brother, kill him with your gun, leave him lying in his uniform dying in the sun" is reference to the in game play.

If one of your comrades gets maimed in the game, they lie in their current position and every so often you'll hear a "Ahh, ahhh, ahh" which also alerts enemy soldiers to his position - you have a choice you can either leave him lying there dying and screaming and a letting all the enemies know where you are, or finish the job and kill him with your gun to stop him from screaming out and alerting enemies.

Take That – Never Forget Lyrics 13 years ago
This is one of the few Take That songs I actually like.

It is very clever. It's about anyone who has made it to the top of their career, as Take That had done.

It's there way of saying that even though they're at the top of the game they are only there for a short time, no-one is invincible.

At the moment it is their time, but they haven't forgot that at any moment they could be on the other side of that hill coming down whilst someone else comes forward.

No matter who you are now, you might be Mark Zucherberg, Bill Gates, Gary Barlow, Paul McCartney or even Google, you always have to face the reality that at this present time you may be riding on the peak of your career, but at any moment that career could come to an end as it has happened at numerous times in the past and will continue to happen, so you never forget your original roots and where you come from.

By Gary singing this he is saying that even though he now is a millionaire with a big mansion in the middle of the Cheshire countryside, he doesn't forget that everyone in Take That originally came from just general housing in Manchester, and it was just luck that they were discovered and managed to live the dream.

Of course if you look at another Manchester artist - Liam Gallagher - his attitude is very different he is like oh yeah Oasis are big, I'm big, and he's gone that big headed that he even ditched his brother Noel and has clearly forgot all about the people who managed to get him where he is, and judging by his performance at the Olympics it might be that his popularity will be taking a very severe dive 'cos his performance of the Oasis hit Wonderwall at the closing ceremony was the worst I've ever heard.

My Chemical Romance – SING Lyrics 13 years ago
Heard this song ages ago, didn't realise it was MCR though until the other day and was really surprised. There is only a few MCR songs I've heard like Welcome to the Black Parade, and Na Na Na, but this song is so different to those two and shows MCR in a totally different light. Going from some of their mosh type tracks to this which is more of a pop ballad than mosh music, very weird but good that it shows that MCR can stretch across many different music styles.

Bee Gees – You Win Again Lyrics 13 years ago
Just love this song, always reminds me one year in Warrington we used to have a RSL radio station WFMR and I think I must have been the only person who called for their competitions.

As an RSL station they were restricted to a one month broadcast every 6 months (they are now Wire FM and have a permanent broadcasting licence), but this one time they were on air I kept calling for their competitions and pretty much every time I managed to win, and once the DJ even followed it with this song "You Win Again".

I think I must have won about 6 times, it was always just after I'd finished my paper round there was a phone box at the end of my route, and normally I'd finish my paper round just in time for the daily competition and get to the phone box in time to make the phone call.

Status Quo – In The Army Now Lyrics 13 years ago
I actually think this song is one of the few good Status Quo songs, didn't realise it wasn't actually wrote by them though.

At times you get a feeling that in place it's trying to copy bits of Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall with the line

'Sergeant calls: "Stand up and fight"'

being very similar to Pink Floyd's line where the teachers screaming at the kids "Wrong do it again!".

Only thing I don't understand in this song is the lines

"Now you remember what the draft man said, nothing to do all day but stay in bed".

Obviously the soldier they're on about in this song is really gullible as I can believe that these army recruitment guys (the drafts men) do mislead to get recruits, but surely this soldier should have realised that whilst fighting a war he's not going to be spending all day in bed?

As for people discussing which war it's on about - it is about the Vietnam war, the answer is actually in the words - fourth verse - "Smiling faces on the way to 'Nam, but when you get there no one gives a damn". So clearly the soldier was on his way to 'Nam (short for VietNAM).

I think though it may have been released a number of years after 'Nam though because it took a few years for the truth to come out about the Vietnam war, songs like Paul Hardcastle's 19 were also about Vietnam but were released a few years later. This could also be the reason for the line about the drafts man lying to him, as many in 'Nam were very young and gullible, but quite hard to believe that anyone going in the army could be so absolutely gullible that they believe they could stay in bed all day in a war.

R.E.M. – Daysleeper Lyrics 14 years ago
It's interesting to see that a lot of people seem to think this song is about a night worker who sleeps in the day.

Whenever I've heard this song I always get the impression that the song is taken from the perception of one of the big billboard screens that they use in places like New York and London to advertise things or projector screens.

The first verse - this is supposed to be the screen setting the scene, this first verse is nothing to do with the screen apart from the fact that when it's switched on in America, Hong Kong & Taipai are just getting up due to the time delay, also possibly even referring to the place where the screen was made (most of these major signs are made in the middle eastern countries).

Then the next bit carries on about that he sees today with the newsprint fray, night is coloured. During the day these screens are switched off and they go to a dull colour, the same as news papers dull print, and yet in the night the lights go on and they are all there in full bright illuminated colour.

The next verse then is referring to the adverts the screen is showing - the bull and the bear are marking their territories, leading the blind with their international glories - rival companies advertising on numerous signs, all trying to get their loyal followers to buy their products, and even pull in new followers to buy their products, and trying to stay large companies throughout the world (international glories)

The next bit he admits that he is a screen - the blinding light - referring to the fact he is one of these advertising screens and he works at night. The bit before could even be on about the time of replacement - crying because the fluorescent flat caffeine lights are replacing the existing screen, maybe some coffee company paid more to have an advert there, and that it's a furious balancing act for companies to keep their name up in lights.

The final verse could be on about when it's been replaced, and being taken out of the city on one of the trash boats - the ocean machine is set to leave at nine, my bed - the landfill site, is pulling me..., maybe even referring to the landfill compactor squeezing it together (squeeze into heaven and valentine) and pulling it.

That's my thoughts on the actual song every time I hear it, and I think what a really clever song that looks at something that's not real from it's perceptive.

MGMT – Kids Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this song is all about the environment and climate change.

Firstly the song is called Kids - these are the ones who will inherit our future when we've destroyed it with pollution.

Then there is the chorus -

Control yourself
Take only what you need from it
A family of trees wanted to be haunted

Meaning control yourself, take only what you need from planet earth, if you take too much there will be nothing left of the amazon (family of trees), except ghosts of trees (haunted)

As for the verses

You were a child
Crawling on your knees toward it
Making momma so proud
But your voice was too loud
We like to watch you laughing
Picking insects off of plants
No time to think of consequences

First verse is the about that we all use non=environmentally friendly products all the time, from when we're born with no time to think about the consequences. The advertisers voices are too loud for us to realise the damage we're doing to the planet. Companies like P&G, Unilever, etc.

The water is warm
But it's sending me shivers
A baby is born
Crying out for attention
The memories fade
Like looking through a fogged mirror
Decision to decisions are made and not bought
But I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot
I guess not

The second verse is based on after climate change - the water is warm - warming of the oceans, melting of the ice caps, but it's sending him shivers because at this point he's realised we've gone too far so it's chilling to think that we've caused our own extinction, and going on to the total destruction of human kind, I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot I guess not, because there will be no-one around to feel the pain.

Chumbawamba – Tubthumping Lyrics 16 years ago
Chumbawamba released numerous other albums as well, prior to Tubthumper, a good one I heard was the Anarchy album. They were going for years prior to Tubthumper but refused to give into the corrupt music industry to get their songs played nationally. Then for Tubthumping they finally give in and signed up to EMI (which caused much disappointment with their fans as on a previous album they'd totally laid into capitalistic record companies like EMI). However Chumbawamba signed to EMI for a reason and it was a very good reason - it was to get their message out around the world, EMI offered them a short term contract and when they signed the contract EMI had split from Thorn (a company that is known for making weapons).

It worked, by them signing to EMI they got songs like Tubthumping played on the radio and people started to notice them, in addition to this two of their other songs also got noticed, Amensia (which probably wasn't a good idea to release as a follow up to their Tubthumping song as the two sound very similar and probably had a lot of people thinking they were one of these bands like 2 Unlimited that release a couple of songs with similar background music, then disappear).

The good thing with Tubthumping, Tubthumper and Amensia though was that it brought the attention of the world to the Liverpool Dockers who were being laid off at the time (although One By One or Good Ship Lifestyle probably would have done better), along with also The KLF/2K's song "K The Millennium".

The song Amnesia was supposed to remind the government that what they were doing to the dockers in the 90's was exactly the same thing that had been done previously to the miners in the 80's - Had Labour forgotten what happened to the Conservatives when they closed Britain's mines down and moved all coal production abroad and now Labour was doing the same thing to the Liverpool dock workers!

Recently though Chumbawamba have split up, the folk music side of Chumbawamba still perform at various folk festivals, and even though I'm not overly impressed by folk music there songs are still quite good and unusual. Danbert Nobacon was the main person behind the pop/punk side of Chumbawamba and he has gone off to form his own group http://www.danbertnobacon.com

Chumbawamba – Amnesia Lyrics 17 years ago
This song was done for the Liverpool Dockers (as stated in the inlay card). I think what it is actually referring to is the dockers were in the same position in the 90's as the miners were in the 80's. "out with the old, cheated by the new", the mines were closed in the UK and all jobs went abroad, same with the dockers, and also at present the same thing is happening to call centres. As for the title Amnesia, I think it's referring to the fact the new government (Labour) made promises to safeguard jobs and that they wouldn't do the same thing that the old government did (Conservative), and there they were doing exactly the same thing that the Conservatives do (so did they forget about this or did they have a sudden bout of Amnesia!)
