This song is just awesome. I agree with the "I could never get close enough to you" party being fabulous especially when he really belts it out. I agree with SarahSpacey on the meaning as well and I feel like I've been in a "a house down on Cherry Lane" for the last year or so, unfortunately and fortunately. Someone else on another page said that RA makes hurting over love sound so good. I think he so perfectly captures that conflict, the best and the worst emotions humans can feel, that's the package deal when you can't have The One.

I also really like the opening, did I trip, etc. and then "cause I know I fell" - fell in love with her. But yeah the imagery of building her wishing well from her tears he collected - can you get any better than that???

Oh and I also love:

"Karina all the silence, it’s so deafening
And all the leaves have fallen from the trees"

And the way he says:
But I’m back here, where your lover wants me to be

And who wouldn't love:

"Yeah, and everytime I tell myself there’s nothing left
May I always say your name and think of you"

I really think this song is at least in his top 5.

I picked my screen name for this song. I fucking love it. It would totally be my favorite RA song, if I could choose one :D I also agree that the best line is "When you're dreamin' of America your father's ghost breaks the door with all his chains just rattlin' around" - one of the best RA lines ever.

Anyway I think this song is about a girl who he knows needs him ("cause if it were easy you wouldn't need me") but who left him or couldn't be with him and is with somebody else, but he always wonders if she'd have stuck around had he told her something he couldn't tell her. And he's kind of jealous of whoever she's with. And he's fascinated with her personality which is somehow captured in the fact that when she's dreaming of America her father's ghost breaks the door with all his chains just rattlin' around, which to me sort of captures an American girl, somewhat of a dreamer, who loves her parents and feels attached to where she came from but also has issues.

That's what I see in it anyway.
