The Temper Trap – Fader Lyrics 15 years ago
This might be a really cheesy interpretation of this song, but I think this is a pretty simple one concerning relationships ending:

[I'm in transit
But I'm stranded on this boat
And I pledge myself allegiance
To a better night's sleep at home]

In between relationships, feeling stranded and lonely, but trying hard as possible to remain optimistic and happy (thus sleeping better at night).

[And the sweet, sweet sun's comin' down
Hard, the sun's comin' down
Hard, it burns the bones
So hold a hand for cover
Hold a hand for cover
Hold a hand for cover from harm]

Now referring to how the relationship in question ended. The "sweet sun" that was the relationship came crashing down to nobody's surprise, so both both individuals are finding cover in other things (e.g. friends and other important people in their lives).

[Talk don't change a thing
Oh, it's fadin' for ya
Words don't sink, they swims
Oh, it's fadin' for ya]

Talking about the state of their relationship never changed anything. The words they say to each other in attempt to "fix" things never really sink into how they behave, so the relationship begins to decline in health and how they feel about each other "fades"

[Bless
This mess we tried our best
For something we can do
While the angels walk with the lonely ones
In the cold rain and rescue you]

The relationship is in shambles, but they tried their hardest to make it work. I think the author is trying to say that staying optimistic is the best thing now because "angels" will rescue the lonely eventually.

[And this fatal world's comin' down
Hard, walls comin' down
Hard, in all our homes
So hold a hand for cover
Hold a hand for cover
Hold a hand for cover from harm]

Same as first pre-chorus: Relationship is falling apart so people are "taking cover".

I really like the lyrics of this song in this sense because they are very pragmatic. There are millions of songs that can be interpreted as being about relationships, and even more about relationships ending, but a large majority of them tend to be unrealistic and talk about how much one character loved another one and can't live anymore without them. Passionate, sure, but not especially true to life.
People get into relationships, they eventually fall apart, and people move on, that's what really happens most of the time, and this song seems to acknowledge that. Even more realistic is the fact that the chorus makes strong mention that a lot of the time talking about things doesn't solve the really pure problems that often lead to relationships ending. Most break ups involve plenty of talking about the state of the relationship beforehand, but despite everybody's best attempts to take talking to heart, they eventually don't change anything, and that's just how it goes sometimes.

Even better is that I don't really see this as a "sad" song, I see it as extremely optimistic. The song isn't trying to BS you into thinking people can always just have done things differently; sometimes relationships just end because people are too different or whatever, despite how much they may have been into each other.
A lot of "break up" songs (if you choose to see Fader as that) tend it inspire either remorse for the past or hope for a reconnection. This song seems to do neither, opting instead to inspire a respect for the past and optimism for an entirely different future.

Death Cab for Cutie – Your New Twin Sized Bed Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think this one is too complicated. It's about somebody who always expected to have somebody else with them in their "bed". I doubt it's literal, but that's irrelevant anyway. This person simply realizes that they have been having false hopes about having somebody, and are depressed or possibly slightly accepting of the fact that they are to remain alone as they have all these years or that they are giving up trying to find somebody to share their bed with, so they are getting rid of the unneeded space.

Just my take.
