Yeah, always thought of the story of someone leaving his home and family to live with his woman far away, reaching inner peace but still missing what he left behind. But I still don't catch the title/well/water thing... BTW, I love the "where your children will be born/ You'll watch them as they run" lines. JB's got this unique quality to make everyone's life's ordinary events look like something epic! |

Great song! Searching for someone special and, at last, finding that it was near to you all the time, and taking a chance to be honest and let your feelings out. The whole "early model Chevrolet" ending (I think it's the one on the cover, isn't it?) is damn beautiful and hopeful. "You go and pack your sorrow Trashman comes tomorrow Leave it at the curb and we'll just roll away" The very final with David Lindley soloing and the engine roaring in the back is somewhat cathartic. |

Magic Rat definitely got the point (I bet, with thatnickname!:)) "Now some guys they just give up living and start dying little by little, piece by piece Some guys come home from work and wash up And go racing in the street" I think the meaning lies in these lines: you try to live your life following just your own soul (but it often ends bed, such as in Something in the night). I saw Bruce live in Milan on 06/25, and during a 9 minutes version of RITS I had tears in my eyes. |

How can this song make you smile? I think the sad music suggests that Ed (or whoever wrote it) was sarcastic. Of course I read it that way for a number of factors, such as personal things this song makes me think about. |

What a fantastic song! You can listen to it and discover new meanings, images and feelings as your life goes by and you grow up with it. Neil's songs often have more than one layer of meaning, so I think it can be both about his breaking up with CSN and about one's personal growth achieved by leaving your yesterday's world in search of your place in the world and your meaning to life. Can't say with worlds how much this song touches me and how much it means to me. "It was then that I knew I've had enough Burned my credit cards for fuel Headed out to where the pavements turn to sand With a one way ticket to the land of truth and my suitcase in my hand How I lost my friends I still don't understand" And the "timeless gorge of changes thing"...how great is that? |

Agree with what most of you said: the earth represented in past-present-future, mankind ruining it, and in the end a few chosen ones flying to a new world with mother nature's silver seed. Never thought of that, but why had the loading begun "all in a dream"? Could it actually be that who's speaking dies dreaming of the escape? Or is it just referring to an unreal and dream-like atmosphere? I think the "After gold rush" thing, apart from the movie title, refers to the end of the hippie era, such as a lot of things in Neil. Anyway, incredibly powerful and beautiful song. |
