I don't think that the speaker really has that much of a hatred for Ohio. As some have said, Ohio is just a tragic scape-goat. Having just taken a depressing trip through Ohio, my spin on thse lyrics is that the speaker is taking a long road trip whilst taking a hard look on his life. Going back and forth from the regrets in his life to the observations of society's faults, the lyrics are a very good collection of ideas, that are actually somewhat related. The speaker is admitting that his life obviously is very lonely, so much that he will not accept anything (including everything he sees on this road trip) as a distraction from his real life problems. This song takes observations that our society cares too much about our luxeries and are making ourselves, dare I say "soulless" (trying to eat our concience). I really do love how Isaac has taken these feelings of depression and emptiness and puts them into lyrics how one might never see them, but it makes such a good point. My favorite lines include "pulling scabs off of regrets". Even the simple "Truly sorry, I see clearly" which really shows how we can't really understand life while never having tons of problems. Don't worry, this pain makes you a better person, or at least I hope to god for my own sake. P.S. I think the one way eyes are headlights on the highway at night because you cannot see who you are driving past with their blinding lights, which gets you thinking. |

I find this song in lyrics and sound to be very stellar and love to listen to it at night while driving or looking at the stars. I think that it is about a person who used to "love everything" in his life more than anything else but for some reason has just broke down. Now he is just workin' on leavin' the living by getting himself wasted and killing himself by probably drunk driving. The dream he is driving is to leave his life which is so much like hell, that even if isaac is athiest, there doesn't need to be an afterlife, just ending it all can be heaven for some people. He is using the word as an emotional place, not physical like religion, its art people, open your minds. |

| Modest Mouse – Nothing New Lyrics | 17 years ago |

When I listened to this song this is what i got out of it. As you know, Isaac is ashamed with the fact that some people can go throughout their whole lives doing meaningless things and cling to society's fads. I think that, "You read a lot into it I never even flipped right through it So what'cha going to do with All this stuff that's scribbled to it is his way of telling a person he cares about that he thinks that the subject, or way of life that this person is getting into really has no point. And "You say, "There's nothing new" And, oh my god, that might be true But what'cha think you're going to do That's worthwhile when there's nothing new"" is another way of telling this person that they should view themselves critically because to really have nothing new is a pathetic way to live your life. And finally, "Oh my god, I can't see But it takes half as much as it used to for me Oh my god, I can't see But it means half as much as it used to to me" is his way of mocking this person by showing that this passive way of life can numb your senses and take real problems too lightly. I think that this song is a way for him to tell someone to really look at what they have really done with their life. |

| If its "sprite and burbon" rather that "bright and burning" (which makes a lot more sense) what does that mean? | |
