Possibly the best jimmy eat world song ever. Definately up there with 23 :] The lyrics are actually beautiful. To me its definately about a break up, the feeling of watching the person you are in love with leave you for someone else..and going through everything that was said, everything they told you they felt for you and every moment you shared and feeling completely lost asking "does it end like this?" There's so much that could be said about the lyrics that it would be pretty much impossible to do it justice but i feel these lyrics are among the most beautiful - "You close your eyes and kiss your hand, then you blow you it. But it isn't meant for me, and I notice. If the choice was ours alone, then why'd we both choose letting go?" "If everything I meant to you, you can lick and seal then fold in two, then I’ve been so blind." "..take it all back take the first, your last, your only Oh, oh, take it all back, take it all back, everything you showed me Oh, oh, this must be how it feels When the feeling goes, oh.." "I told you as I haven't, I’ve never felt this way." - pretty much the most heartbreaking line in the whole song and the feeling behind jim's voice, especially when he sings it live, shows just how strongly he felt it.. aaaahh definately one of the best bands ever |

"Fell in love with a ghost, I'm ashamed, And torn apart at the seams, under the weight, Of all the truth that a lie uncovers, And all the regret that comes from one mistake" - He fell in love with "the ghost" of the girl - he never saw the real person she was, just the person he wanted her to be and is ashamed that he didn't see how she really was from the beginning. She ends up cheating on him, and lying to him..and when he finds out the truth he is crushed by it. She tells him it was just one big mistake and she regrets it. He takes her back as afterall she tells him her feelings haven't changed towards him - "Still you say, you said, that nothings changed for you, So tell me, tell me yeah, what you're trying to prove," - he is just left wondering only why she did it and what she is trying to prove. It seems she is showing him that she could be with someone else if she wants to but he doesn't understand why she needs to do that to him. She begs him back telling him "Don't say it's too late, 'Cause I need you to care" - and he takes her back as it is in fact him that needs her to care.. But he is beginning to see how she really is and that fact that what she does every time is "always place the blame, on something, you don't understand" and the fact that some things and some people never change - they're always going to blame other people or other things for their mistakes, and consequently keep hurting people and never taking responsibility or changing - "you, (will) Always be the same, 'cause some things, never change" "I bet my fate on a chance at glory, I pulled the handle with hopes that I could fill, All the voids that a broken past brings, And strip the focus that blinded you from me" - he knows that he should have seen that she wasn't worth it from the beginning and was bad for him, but he wanted it to work out with her so much that he let himself fall for her. It seems she had had bad past experiences and had been hurt and cheated on so many times before that she no longer could care enough or be faithful as she was too scared - from her "broken past" - but he thought he could fill the parts that were missing and show her that she could care and trust again but she kept returning to her old ways - he realised he should have seen it coming as "some things never change" - he is pretty much gutted that he realises he was wrong and he wasn't enough to change her. He was so focussed on how perfect he thought she was that her real self was hidden from his view - links to the whole "love is blind" thing.. His resentment towards her is shown by the repetition at the end - "But you always place the blame, on something, don't understand you, Always be the same, 'cause somethings, never change, you Always place the blame, on something, don't understand you, Always be the same, cuz somethings, never change They never change, yeah" You can hear the emotion in his voice and the heartbreak in his words as he knows he should have seen it all from the beginning but he was willing to risk getting hurt for her cause all he wanted was for it to work. But at the end of the day he couldn't change her, she was never going to treat him the way he deserved and this song is basically about how much it hurts to realise that... awesome song :] |

I agree with jillster55. In my opinion, from the way the guy says "From the moment I saw you I was hypnotized couldn't wait to get you alone" shows that he felt a strong attraction to the girl from the very second he noticed her and can't wait for his chance to even just walk with her and speak to her. "I can see from across the room There's a tear in your storied eye I was leaving but I'm coming back Since your heart's in beat with mine" - he was about to leave the party but see's that the girl is upset and decides to turn around, feeling that her heart is "in beat" with his, again showing the immediate attraction. That Mark didn't do you right When he left in your best friend's ride With the face of an angel, girl You deserve to be treated more than right - the guy she was with cheated on her, not only with a random girl, but with her best friend which must hurt a million times more. He feels that she deserves to be treated so much better and wants to show her that she matters and is beautiful, even if only for one night. "Go ahead and call your friends I'll do whatever it takes So I can make you trust This party's going south Let me know what's going on with us" & "(We can make it if you want to, baby) Come inside (I would love to show you the way) For tonight (And I'm not talking about forever) I'm just talking tonight." - he makes it clear to her that he'd like to spend the night with her and is waiting for her response... She feels she shouldn't as she is still technically with the "Mark" guy..and the reference to calling her friends may be to get reassurance on what she should do. He is saying take your time, discuss it with your friends, he will "do anything" to make her realise he is genuine and it's alright, she can trust him, and he's willing to even just spend one night with her and never tell anyone about it if that's what she wants - it doesn't have to lead to anything long term and he is not naive enough to bealive they're going to get into a relationship with her that will last "forever" - after tonight she can go back to Mark if she wants to. He knows that he won't get to be with her, but its okay, if it feels right and there's chemistry between them then why not have an amazing night where he can show her how she deserves to be treated. Afterall, her 'boyfriend' Mark left with her best friend... - "Cause it's all right, There's nothing to stop us, If it feels right, Then everything's fine, For just one night, Baby, go back to your life, And I'll go back to mine." "Last night I saw a photograph From the party where we chilled (Party where we chilled) It was showing the two of us And the Colt 45 we killed (Colt 45 we killed)" - after letting her go back to her life, he see's photo's of the party months later and there is one of the two of them together... "Here I am just writing you A letter from the distance past (From the distance past) Enclosed is a photograph To remind you of the times we had" - He write's her a letter to remind her of that perfect night they spent together, including the photo...hoping he may have a chance to be with her again if she remembers and has any feelings towards him...incase maybe she hasn't completely forgotten about him...again showing the fact he had feelings for the girl, and that to him it was more than just a one night stand. amazing song :] |
