Rufus Wainwright – The Maker Makes Lyrics 15 years ago
Simple yet deep, indeed very much like a lullaby, it is an achingly beautiful song.

I just like to add one little info I found when trying to understand a line that bugged me which is
Get along little doggies.

"A dogie is a calf (young cow) that has no mother. Git along little doggie is a phrase shoutted out by cowboys while hearding cattle." (urbandictionary.com)

Of course, if you think of the Maker as God, you can think of him also as the Shepard as in the Lord's Prayer, guiding all humankind and shaping its life.

I think Rufus is just splendid to include such a reference in the lyrics, it shows how much he really knows what he's doing. He is great.

American Psycho... one of my favourite books and I only noticed now that this totally awesome song is its song version! Basically.

Bob Dylan – It Ain't Me Babe Lyrics 17 years ago
It's so interesting that people can interpret the exact same lyrics so differently without any of them being necessarily wrong... I came to check something in the lyrics and I was astonished to find all these different opinions about this song.

So my take on it is that there's this guy who sings this song to a girl whom he's had a relationship with, probably not since too long, when he realizes that while the girl fell deeply in love with him and wants him to be the love of her life ("you say you're looking for someone..."), he himself is not at all passionate about her ("everything inside is made of stone. there's nothing in here moving"). But he likes her as a person so he wants to finish the relationship as gently as possible (e.g. calling her "babe").
He asks her not to visit him anymore ("go away from my window") and to try to face the fact that he doesn't love her ("go lightly from the ledge, babe, go lightly on the ground").
Besides he's probably found someone new who interests him more than this girl ("and anyway I'm not alone").

All in all, it's such an amazing song, a heartbreaking story told wonderfully subtly.
