Nobody mentions what the last words in the song mean. I can't find them described or translated anywhere. They sound vaguely like they could be Hindi. Does anyone know? |

This song, I think, has obvious political ideas in it. I believe this is about politics and moronic choices, such as we've seen in this most recent election (2016) |

I think this song definitely refers to a *certain kind* of authority. You have this reference: "With all the green belts wrapped around our minds", which might be a reference to the "green" movement and the pretext for much of what the current administration is attempting to fob off on us beginning with the farce called man-made global warming, and culminating in legislation called "Cap and Trade" which will finish the job on the economy that the health care bill, the nationalizing of the banks, student loans and car companies has just begun.
Then you have this line: "We have to unify and watch our flag ascend!"
This is obviously an anthem written for the Tea Party movement.

I first heard this song and saw the video just yesterday, and my first impulse was to think "They're singing about the Obama administration."
I've heard, though, that this was written to protest the G20. Whatever the reasoning behind it, I'm sorry...but it fits what the current administration is doing to this country. You need to think long and hard and honestly to recognize it, though, and I find most people can't or won't. |

| Collective Soul – December Lyrics

Just a comment...there's not a reason in the world why this song shouldn't work on many levels. OF COURSE they intended you should think of a blowjob. But really, it's not the blowjob itself that's being alluded to here. It's the aftermath...it's the lack of acceptance. "Go ahead," our narrator says, "take my vital essence and then just spit it out."
Like all good poetry, this poem/song works on many levels. I'm not very familiar with Collective Soul, but if (as some of you say) many of their songs contain spiritual allusions, then it's safe to bet that this one is doing that, too. On that level, it may be talking about faith. The water in the hand, an allusion to baptism. Again...a precious fluid that the narrator is telling someone to take and then spit out (if this person believes he's contaminated).
I think it's a wonderful song that does everything a good piece should do. It works on a number of levels, including the blowjob one, and because of how it's written, it actually elevates the blowjob and the reaction a woman may often have to it, to a lack of faith, or a lack of stomach for what's truly essential. Something like that. |

| Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight Lyrics

I like Phil Collins. I guess that today, that's tantamount to an admission that you like sneaking to the refrigerator at midnight to eat raw cookie dough---it's a guilty pleasure. But I'm not inclined to feel guilty about what I like.
I agree with Melem...whether or not collins ever saw a drowning is pretty much irrelevant. I would point to the line: "I've been waiting for this moment for all of my life" as an indication that this song is one about revenge, and it would seem to be he's seeking revenge on someone he's known all his life. We don't know what he thinks he's avenging, and it doesn't matter. I remember that this song was used on an episode of Miami Vice, and in that case I believe it had something to do with one criminal taking revenge on another...something about drug dealing. |

| William Shatner – Common People Lyrics

The meaning of this song is pretty obvious, so I think what really needs to be discussed is the meaning implicit in having William Shatner do it. And the meaning, here (and in the other songs from the same album) is that his contribution here is both kitschy and, in many cases, poignant. He puts something into this song that wasn't there before...and it's a good something. |
