Surprised no one has commented on this song yet. It is easily my favorite one on the album. It really seems to be a heartbreakingly simple song about wanting to love, and knowing it's going to destroy you. |

I wonder if the "codes and keys" reference has to do with the utilization of technology as a way of "protecting" oneself "from the pangs of jealousy." Both Ben and Zooey are pretty active on twitter, and perhaps he was drawing inspiration from the evolving world of social networking - you can throw up walls and pretend to be someone that you're not, putting up the front that everything is okay when it's actually the exact opposite. The album art also has a "hashtag" (pound sign) on the cover, so that might also tie into the theme as well. |

I kind of love the auto tune. More power to him. My favorite section is the fourth "song" - who know that you could (sort of) dance to sufjan stevens?? |

I love it - Sufjan's not fucking around this time! Half of the song is plaintive, begging for some sort of relief, the other half is determined, chaotic, ready to take on the world. Long live the new incarnation of Sufjan! |

My favorite song off the EP as well. "From now on let the universe be your shelter from the enemy" - what a reassuring lyric in the face of the chaos of this tenuous world. |

| Sufjan Stevens – Barn Owl, Night Killer Lyrics

It seems like sufjan is simultaneously speaking from the perspective of an animal (the owl, perhaps) and a boy who found the animal (probably injured). Ultimately, the boy abuses the animal (Wrapped in a blanket of red, the owl and the tanager sat, the owl and the tanager said
one waits until the hour is death.). I think this song explores the notion of abuse in an eerie and beautiful way. |
