Very unsettling. It could almost be a straightforward love song. Theres references to Jesus and the planets throughout the album, which I guess is about finding some kind of salvation or guiding force. The problem is he just can't find it. Theres a 'chord' in her 'that he could not find to strike' and 'One must stay and one must depart' and he walks away.
The rain (referred to more then once as Appers66 points out) is like the threat of an oncoming storm or even biblical style flood. She may look like a 'Jesus of the moon' but he still fails to make any sense or meaning out of life. Appropriate that the album ends on the song 'More news from nowhere'. He's not the first to worry about drifting though a life that may proves futile, pointless and lonely. The most surprising thing though is that the album is still pretty funny. Cave hits 50 and faces a mid-life crisis with characteristically wry humour. |

Jackacoop, its Jesus that raises himself from the dead after 3 days, not Lazarus. He doesn't wait till he's moulding and his skins peeling off before he raises him while his relatives keep him in the house despite what must have been an unbelievable stench in a hot country. This was a story thats told to kids in primary schools remember. Its not mean't to portray Jesus as a sick weirdo entertaining a family of pyscho's (well in the bible story if not this song, anyway). |

I reckon Philips his friend, either a real guy or just invented for the song. I never thought this was about potential suitors, I thought it was about a friend of his who's got mixed up with the wrong guys. It would seem a bit bitter for him to assume that anyone else as a lover would completely destroy them. I think its a love song but a love song for his friend whom he still cares about and doesn't want to see throw his life away. Even though in the past it seems 'philip' betrayed him, he's prepared to let go as its too important and he doesn't ultimately want to lose his friend. |
