I think that the song is about further straining a relationship to try and make things better in the long run. The narrator goes to Chickamauga and it causes someone who'd never leave on their own to hate him. Example: a cheating boyfriend whose current girlfriend just isn't the one or maybe Jay seeking new band members. He's using the irony of the fact that Chickamauga is also the location of one of the bloodiest civil war battles to find a miracle of averting an impending disaster. The reasoning for the actions are because it's been so bad that he doesn't want to taste those tears again. |

Now to through a wrench into the spokes. Yes the religious ties are strong and are likely what they were thinking when they penned the song, but what if the song is about the early settlers or even modern settlers of America. Come all you weary would be like saying give us your weak and tired, lay down your burdens and rest for your souls because my yoke is easy and my burden is kind would be like settle this land and live free of opression (no political flaming please). I`ll take yours upon me and you can take mine is like saying a government for the people by the people. Come all you weary, move through the earth - immigrants are welcome from all over the planet, You've been spurned at fine restaurants and kicked out of church - a lot of the early immigrants were religious refugees. I`ve got a couple of loaves, so sit down at my feet, lend me your ears and we'll break bread and eat, a reference to the melting pot. Come all you weary Come gather round near me Find rest for your souls - settle here, be free from religious persecution. Come all you weary, crippled you lay I`ll help you along you can lay down your canes - again a welcoming to the tired and weak. We`ve got a long way to go but we`ll travel as friends the lights growing bright further up, further in - a reference to the western expansion, migration down the various trails in caravans travelling westward. |
