| Rent – Will I? Lyrics

I know the story behind this line and every time I hear it I think back to what Anthony Rapp was going through when he first heard the song. I've been a fan of the show for as long as I can remember and every time I hear this song I learn something new from it. In the grand scheme of things we might not be important, but we are important in our own lives and to those around us. There will always be someone who misses you when you're gone, and you will always have people there to help you if you can find the courage to reach for them. |

The actual meaning behind this song can be found in William Golding's novel "The Lord of The Flies" in which a plane of young boys fleeing from the air raids in WWII England crashes on an island, leaving them without adult supervision. Ralph, originally elected the leader in the story is narrator in the song, nearly loses his sanity as he is hunted by the other boys. In his delirium he speaks to his dead friend Piggy, an odd boy with asthma who had been the pariah of the group prior to his death at the hands of Roger, a spear and the bolder which crushed him to death. Piggy was the strongest symbol of civilization, and with his death the island turns completely to savagery, leaving Ralph on his own. |
