| Portugal. The Man – Evil Friends Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| For this entire album, it is my belief that John is actually taking on the voices of distinct characters. If you have listened to his past albums, he is not a particularly self-loathing person, he acknowledges his struggles, but certainly there isn't self-hatred. Also, John is known for his story-telling lyrics. This album is a shift because he is now telling stories but from the first-person, however; not necessarily his actual voice. I think with most of these songs, except the final track which really sounds like his own voice, he is providing commentary on certain perspectives, attitudes, and lifestyles through that first person. I think in the case of Evil Friends, it is actually referring to a very narcissistic, self-involved individual. I think we have a lot of platforms, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, that really let the narcissistic person self-indulge constantly. I think, as a result, this certain character no longer has much interest in cultivating relationships with others because they spend so much time trying to cultivate their own image for others to consume. | |
| Pinback – Drawstring Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| Instead of "where's some' in the background, I think it is "our sun". | |
| Pinback – Bouquet Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
After "Gone for good," it should be: You can take that how you want. I adjust the time For you to be here. Don't go. And you taste my tears. And we share our souls. I'm walking on my own. I'm walking all alone. |
|
| Pinback – Bouquet Lyrics | 13 years ago |

Indeed these lyrics are wrong. All your changes are right except it is "it's beeding innocent all over," as per the Autumn of the Seraphs lyrics that come with the album. |

| Whoops! Didn't mean to add in power twice. (although it makes sense because we're seriously into that especially in america..) | |
| Portugal. The Man – Head Is a Flame (Cool With It) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
This album is my bible. My interpretation is we all conform and start to believe in these fucked up things we never thought we'd believe in. We lose sight of the bigger picture and instead focus on the bullshit that doesn't add up to life in anyway. Rank, wealth, power, possession, power. We don't know any better though because we forget (or no longer care) about what we originally thought. "We're cool with it" because we don't realize or remember there ever being an alternative. The things that really matter fall by the wayside as we're thrown into society. We end up conforming to the point that we become just like the group that created what we are. Thus the cycle continues. We will trap more people and on and on.. "I became a child of the universe Reborn into this galactic prism" But this person now understands the true importance of life. By saying prism he recognizes the intricacies of life. He realizes that there's more to life than what he's been told. Accordingly, he's been "reborn" because he now understands what really matters. He no longer has the fog of society clouding his vision. |

| Portugal. The Man – My Mind Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
If you read get the vinyl and read the lyrics printed it says: My mind is all gone. Down deep pace past, finding another there, got a dollar? Sold! You are hands, just do as I please. I feel my body moving and feel these feet a moving. So there's a layer. |
|
| Portugal. The Man – My Mind Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| whoops. i meant to rate this comment down instead of up! i think you're one of those people who thinks that any song that has too much imagery in it and that they can't figure out is automatically about drugs. boooo on you. | |
| Portugal. The Man – So American Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| i think buying the album is showing support. if you buy it from them directly, its giving them support, not itunes or something. | |
| Portugal. The Man – Bellies Are Full Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I have to think it is indeed about two different societies. The poor man in wealth but rich in life VS the rich man in wealth poor in life. The poor man has to struggle to make a living but he's willing to work hard and he's proud of where he comes from. He's glad he's not rich and wouldn't want to because he's full of life and love. "don't you feed them hungry or hold somebody when you're sleeping through that night all alone" ^Feed them hungry and hold somebody when you're alone contradict each other. I believe that's the point. You'll never feel really full like we do because you're hungry for a real life. Instead of "feeding" you use gluttony. Almost as if, eating to fill a void. (Not neccesarily limited to just food though). Holding somebody when you're really alone. They're with somebody but not out of love so therefore they feel empty and lonely. Lastly, "hold tight maybe we're all hungry and lonely cause those fires don't burn well alone" I think he's lamenting here. I think he feels hungry and lonely because he doesn't share love with somebody |

| Portugal. The Man – Shade Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I don't fully know but I have a feeling it's about people settling in places (maybe Alaska, maybe not) expecting a new, better life just to have to work their ass off until they're "swallowed up" by the shittiness of a job or that society. I also suspect he wants to go back to a simpler time (maybe a simpler time in Alaska). "Where no one knows if they'll ever need again (I want to)" I also wonder if this line means maybe people forgot about the good, happy life they wanted. Because now those same people just want to survive so they don't care about being satisfied anymore as long as they live. And he's saying, he still wants that happy life. Anywho, that's my guess. |

| The Black Keys – Sinister Kid Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Oh and I realize I quoted wrong lyrics. The lyrics in the album specifically say "A drop dead sprint from the day hes born" | |
| The Black Keys – Sinister Kid Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Ima have to agree with Spohhh. I think it's his natural-born evil. "A sinister kid is a kid who runs to meet his maker A drop that spreads from the day he's born Straight into his maker's arms" It sounds as if even though he's saying he's born to his mother, his real maker is the devil. "A drop" is made to this real maker. "Well the crooks are out And the streets are gray You know I wouldn't have it any other way" He's naturally drawn to evil ways such as thievery, murder, despair, etc.. "I got a tortured mind And my blade is sharp A bad combination in the dark" I think this speaks for itself. |

| The Black Keys – Give Your Heart Away Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
First of all, this is the very first song by the Black Keys I heard and it was like the piece of puzzle life had been missing! They are so very talented on every album. Anywhoo.. I think he's telling his love that he's the only man who is truly willing to give his heart to her; to completely give himself to her and be vunerable in a way no other man is willing to be for her sake. He's also saying that he's here for her now, that he'll always be, and even when he's gone (dead and/or traveling) he's still always going to love her. |

| Portugal. The Man – Guns.Guns...Guns Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Conforming into society even when you want to do other things because it's easier and it's almost as if it's out of default. Also knowing that conforming is bleak but it's inevitable. D: | |

| Portugal. The Man – Fantastic Pace Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
oh rupptizzle, you must be a kindred spirit! :) For the very first thing I thought of when I interpreted these lyrics was christopher mccandless. Furthermore, I agree with pretty much everything you said. I believe initially, as a boy, he was a lively, unique boy excited about life. But as the years went on society wore him down and he conformed which turned him into a kind of souless, empty shell. and so! as said, we are left to wonder if he withered away, escaped, or.. died. And though I would like to hope he escaped, I have a sad feeling he withered away. nonetheless, a fantastic song. |

| nobody likes pretentious assholes who act like they know the meaning of everything. theres nothing wrong with personal speculations. | |
| The Walkmen – In The New Year Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I personally think it's about a man who's in a love with a woman who's a gypsy/vagabond. He waits by because he loves her and he knows she loves him too but she's the type of person who doesn't stay in one place. Home is only truly home when she's there. |

| Minus the Bear – The Game Needed Me Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Real pleasure and real happiness can't be faked or bought. Stop wasting time on things that don't matter because life is short. Why aren't you willing to take a chance on something good? That's what I think anyways :) |
|
| Grizzly Bear – Slow Life Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
My interpretation: "I think I know what's on your mind A couple words, a great divide " (You dont want to do this, you're going to say a few words that will push me away) "Even though you're the only one I see It's the last catastrophe Place your bets on chance and apathy" (I love you but this is the last time I can take a chance on love. This person has been hurt in the past.) "Take anything you want, it's fine Keep up the slow life for the night" (Ill give you anything if we can have one more night together) This person is in love and is willing to make one final chance at love with someone but this person is a bit worried that the person they love will slip away. |

| Jefferson Airplane – White Rabbit Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| It's about not only feeding your head with drugs but things that make you happy. | |
| My Morning Jacket – Off the Record Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Perhaps he's telling this girl that even though he likes her, he just cannot commit to a serious relationship, that no matter what it's just not in him. She's angry and he knows that she can't just be with him unless it's an actual relationship. I think he wants them to somehow work it out? but still doesn't want anything official. Perhaps? :) |

| Portugal. The Man – Elephants Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I think it's about a world where everyone does what the told (like a communist world) out of fear but there's a rebellion slowly taking place and bubbling up. It's on the verge! | |
| Portugal. The Man – Sun Brother Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Okay! So soon I will be done commenting on this song. Anyways! I think the song is about a man who has found inner enlightenment and he knows what's important to him (nature) and that civilization doesn't really matter to him as long as he has that. | |
| Portugal. The Man – AKA M80 The Wolf Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I adore this song! My heart fills up with happiness whenever I hear it. Anywho. It sounds as if John Gourley is speaking about Alaska and how beautiful it was and how he loved really living amongst nature and being free. He's proud of where he comes from. |
|
| Portugal. The Man – How The Leopard Got Its Spots Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I agree with soulsetonfire. It sounds like a country invading another country. But therealbrucewayne made some very valid points since an invasion is war related of course. |
|
| Portugal. The Man – All My People Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
It sounds as if someone has discovered something that will help him save his people? Maybe not neccesarily like that but an interpretation of that sort of idea. |
|
| Portugal. The Man – Sugar Cinnamon Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Now that I have had efficient time to read this through I think that's about poor vs the rich. "Baby boys born a gentleman," If a baby is born into a rich family, society respects him. "Did you ever know anyone sleeping on the streets?" Telling the rich that they shouldn't mock/judge the poor because they've never known anyone who have actually lived through that scenario. And then I think the song goes onto say that really it's the rich, greedy ones you should actually watch out for. "There's always moving where we're sleeping," means that when everyone is sound asleep they're really scheming around us, involving us. And lastly, I believe "I'll dance on that cross," means he'd rather be one of the poor than one of rich. |
|
| Grizzly Bear – On a Neck, On a Spit Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I have a vague feeling this song is about a guy who longs for his old home that really no longer exists. He had a time where he spent most of his time by himself but he was lonely then so he's now latched on to someone and created a new "home" but he knows its false. | |
| Grizzly Bear – Marla Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I also have a different interpretation that it's about a maid/mistress who's love his about to leave so she's trying to make him stay by hiding his things and if it doesn't work she'll resort to murder. So either way! |
|
| Wolfmother – Cosmonaut Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
That! is what Wolfmother is all about! Enlightenment! I completely agree. The song must be about two people's need to understand life and the world and their journey and their discovery of what they were searching for! !! :) |
|
| Grizzly Bear – Marla Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
A major nod to greed22 and leechu! The interpretation I get is very close to those two. It seems to me as if Mr Forbes and the narrator are both ghosts. I believe Mr Forbes was the owner of the house and the narrator was a maid who was secretly in love with him. I think they both died long ago but inhabit the house still, as if they are living. It's my believe that Mr Forbes has decided that he wishes to leave the human world, therefore the house, and go to the world of the departed. But! He refuses to leave without his cherished objects from his human life and does not want to leave without them. The maid doesn't want him to leave so she's hidden all of his things, knowing that he cannot bring himself to leave with said objects. But that's just my interpretation :) |

| Death from Above 1979 – Do It! Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I really enjoy this song. Its him basically apologizing for being a dick. | |
| Wolfmother – Cosmonaut Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Nah I dont think its about that. To me it sounds like the song is about people being in their purest forms. "No longer part of any race". Forget about race, ethnicity. "All worldly pleasures left behind". Forget about luxury items, and objects that don't matter. "No longer part of our own kind". Forget about trivial things that don't matter. Just be. |
