Smoking Popes – The Corner Lyrics 16 years ago
interesting. i'd just assumed it was a guy who killed his girlfriend in the heat of the moment. that capote thing makes sense though. no idea why i assumed it was a significant other.

Smoking Popes – Pretty Pathetic Lyrics 16 years ago
Also I have to say I laugh my ass off when he says "so let's move on ... to the part where I begin to sense ..."

Absolutely hilarious.

Josh Caterer is a fucking genius. Line-for-line this song happened to me. Line-for-fucking-line. It's been so long it just makes me laugh though at the eerie similarity. At the time I felt like no one could understand what it was like, but hearing this song (and others) you realize your situation is just the same as anyone else's. It's nice.

When I hear this song I feel like my spirit was channeled to write the lyrics.

AJJ – Darkest Heart Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, this seems like a song about love (or lack thereof). Kind of related the "I Am So Mad At You"

The situation I imagine is the narrator has been left by his girlfriend (or possibly left her for no good reason). He still has strong feelings for her so he's asking that she act nefariously in order to justify what happened. In other words, so that he can "rest in peace."

AJJ – Daddy Didn't Love Me Lyrics 17 years ago
i take it as being hyperbole. essentially mistreated children grow up to be great, yet disturbed, figures. another example is the "my father touched my butthole" sketch from mr. show.

AJJ – Unicron Lyrics 17 years ago
i always thought this was just about humans exploiting the planet and deserving the inevitable destruction brought about by said exploitation.

the last line isn't necessarily opposed to the transformer theory. i mean ... werewolves transform from one form to another so.

Frank Black and the Catholics – Manitoba Lyrics 17 years ago
this song apparently is related to some inuit myth about the aurora borealis being the face of god.

Frank Black and the Catholics – The Vanishing Spies Lyrics 17 years ago
frank said that this song is about the lost mars probe. he thought he saw it and when he realized it wasn't there he became overwhelmed with a feeling of loneliness.

two eyes out of the head is a reference to the satellite being sent up from earth. and then when it got lost all that was said was "that's just how some things don't materialize"

Frank Black and the Catholics – Solid Gold Lyrics 17 years ago
i always thought this was about a breakup or divorce. evidently though, i heard through the grapevine, that it's about driving on the freeway. i'm assuming the solid gold for you finger is a reference to the fact that routinely in traffic you receive the middle finger so he's being sarcastic about it.

Frank Black and the Catholics – Speedy Marie Lyrics 17 years ago
it's about his former girlfriend/wife (not sure which): Jean Marie Walsh.

this is abundantly clear when you notice the acrostic during the beautiful poem at the end that spells out her name. frank's a genius.

it's worth noting also that it's the same high school frank attended years before. that's what spurred him to write the song even though he had never met shazeeb.

Frank Black and the Catholics – Dog Gone Lyrics 17 years ago
i know frank isn't a christian, but i know various religious traditions influence his songwriting. i've always taken this song to be somewhat about jesus. not really a preachy song, just one from jesus' perspective.

the first part is jesus accepting his fate. he begs his father to allow him to avoid his death but nothing changs (i could not pray). his followers abandoned him when the romans came after him (couldn't get no witness). then jesus eventually accepts his father's will and his fate (then a voice ... said you've got to carry it on). he takes up his cross to go up to his crucifixion (out along the way, i got so bogged down).

the point of his visit is to carry him on. carry on his teaching to achieve salvation for the masses whom without his sacrifice would be left in sheoul without being granted entrance into the eternal kingdom (your noose is gonna break when i am there).

then the bridge part about "no memphis, no nepal, etc" i'm assuming is a reference to the second coming and inevitable apocalypse.

perhaps this interpretation just got formulated in my head watching the video though with the street preacher and "the end is neigh" sign.

Eagle-Eye Cherry – Save Tonight Lyrics 17 years ago
while i don't think it's ABOUT holy thursday, the striking similiarties are clearly there. it'd also be possible to use a religious allusion such as that to convey a secular meaning. the hold steady do it all the time.

Cake – Where Would I Be? Lyrics 17 years ago
to me this song perfectly describes my rock relationship with my religion and god.

to me it's about, like someone else said, coming to terms with god. there's sort of a reference to a prodigal son-esque thing with "i've been hoping your love's not gone". the feeling of not being worthy of god's love and feeling like you are too depraved to be loved.

the next part refers to the ancient problem of evil. natural disasters happen and the writer sees suffering and the rivers 'raging' in god's blood. the idea of an angry and malevolent god. but then he retracts this in the chorus saying "where would i be without your love" and "your arms around me" saying despite these bad things that happen, perhaps it's not your doing, but it's your love that keeps me sane through all this trial.

in the second verse he says "you want to be the center of my life" ad meiorem dei gloriam. you want me to do all things for your good. the next line is questioning his faith. i believe but sometimes that feels like it isn't enough. if i KNEW you i wouldn't run, but you've been "cloudy" and occasionally in my life you've been "distant and dark" so i'm incapable of truly knowing you. and he again harkens back to the idea of god's wrath, this time more specifically with a reference to noah and the ark where of course god purified the world through killing the evil people who were still people.

then he comes around again saying despite the evil, i don't think it's your fault, and you, god, are the only thing that can get me through. i'd be lost without god.
