I agree with imveryboring.

"Like its politicians and its wars, society gets the teenagers it deserves."

They Might Be Giants – Purple Toupee Lyrics 17 years ago
I love "Martin X was mad when they outlawed bell bottoms." When I was little I got MLK and Malcolm X mixed up as well XD

I like the phrase "24-carat dead." Also "open sign on an abandoned store."

Freezepop – Tenisu no boifurendo Lyrics 17 years ago
I guess it's about a girl who has a crush on a guy who plays tennis. *shrugs*

xxgonexx, I'm still learning Japanese so I can't translate the whole thing, but heya means room. House is ie (and home is uchi). So the second-to-last stanza says,

But today it's raining
So (because of that) I'm in your home
You are very cute
I want to go to your room

I think the boy is teaching her how to play tennis and when it starts raining they go inside. It's kind of a sweet song :)

I agree. And I can't really explain it, but I think there's a connection between that and the ocean imagery.

I think they would object to you using the term "U.K." ;)

But yes, I agree.

Heh. I was born the year Superunknown came out. I discovered them when I got a tape for free from a garage sale.

They Might Be Giants – Dr Worm Lyrics 17 years ago
@CanteenDave: Yes. Obviously.

I think that while many TMBG songs are full of deep meaning (even if they never have an "official" interpretation) this one is probably one to be taken literally.

They Might Be Giants – The Mesopotamians Lyrics 17 years ago
This song always reminds me of my amazing sixth- and seventh-grade social studies teacher, who taught us about the Mesopotamians and the Indus valley civilization.

LMAO @ "Except for Ashurbanipal who says my haircut makes me look like a Mohenjo-daroan."

@omgwow: How does it remind you of Final Fantasy? o_O

I agree with CaptHayfever.

They Might Be Giants – Don't Let's Start Lyrics 17 years ago
I always thought it was about a father and his teenage daughter, maybe I was taking "Could believe for all the world / That you're my precious little girl" too literally. Since no TMBG song has an official meaning, and I prefer my interpretation, I guess I'll keep it :p Especially since the father/daughter conflict is more relevant to my own life atm.

Runrig – Dance Called America Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't know jack about this artist, but I heard this song on Pandora and I liked it a lot. Not sure what it means, but it reminded me of the Proclaimer's song Letter to America. These guys have Scottish accents too, right?

Fountains of Wayne – Mexican Wine Lyrics 17 years ago
Does anyone else think think "he was killed in a cellular phone explosion" means he was killed in a terrorist attack? Bombs can be set off by calling a cell phone.
To be killed in a terrorist attack is terrible, but completely random -- just a result of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It goes along with the whole theme of this song, namely, "shit happens, but life goes on." That's how I interpreted it, anyway :P

They Might Be Giants – Ana Ng Lyrics 17 years ago
They Might Be Giants are from New York. The point at the opposite end of the earth (where the bullet would come out if you fired a gun through a globe at New York) is somewhere in the Indian Ocean. Too bad, it would be interesting if there was a city there where one could look for an Ana Ng :)
