this song is so heartwrenching to me :[ you feel hope for the person in this position. I think its about a person who is still in love with an ex, and still plays the position of their lover, even though the relationship is over. "I want you to be free but I don't wanna share" he/she wants to let their ex go, but they don't want to see other people with them. these lyrics are so well written: "and why wait another day when a day won't change a thing" they're saying time won't change the way they feel "please don't ever let me say that again" they then realize they shouldnt think in that mindset, and hope to get over their ex "mama I aint waiting I aint waiting but i'm still holding on" this is what makes me think this song is written in a feminine point of view, becuase of a duaghter's connection with her mother, and the way they talk about relationships, shes basically explaining to her mother that shes not waiting for her lover to come back to her, and then says "but im still holding on" meaning she still has hope that they will come back. its all very sad and it explains getting over a past love so well. |

wow, I'm surprised noone has tried to interpret this song. The way I see it, it's a duaghter speaking about her father raping her, and in this she gets pregnant with his child. surprisingly, she attempts to forgive him and raise the child. The lyrics pinpoint it, if you think of them in that way. "I remember a far away laugh a sweet caresse you'd help me zip up my dress. & I remember your arms wrapped around my neck twenty one shells wrapped in a nest. Endlessness. Didn't last. " This represents the time before the rape, where everything was sweet and the father played the position of a father. I also think that it foreshadows the rape, with him zipping up her dress, I think it could be where he starts to feel lust for her. "I remember no place for me to hide. Before you came home at night. & I remember you turnin' out the lights all i ever saw was the red in your eyes. No big surprise. Happened nearly every night your own flesh & blood. I did wonder why." this is what pins it the most, especially "your own flesh and blood" "I remember not knowing what to say & how calm you had remained your child still born with no name. " this is where the birth of the child comes into play, she keeps it a secret who the father is because she doesnt want to reveal that it is her own father, which is why the baby has no name. he didnt know what to say because he didnt expect a pregnancy to come from his actions, and he had to remain somewhat calm about the whole thing, so he doesnt reveal that it was him. "I remember the never ending summer rain." this just sets the scene, the baby was obviously born in summer, and it would only apply that it always was raining becuase of the discomfort and awkwardness the family must of felt. "Please don't let what was get in the way of whats next. Don't forget that whats to come hasn't come yet." this is where the forgiving from the daughter comes in, she still wants her father in her life (which is a shock to me, and is also why i think it is set in earlier times, where respect for your parents was still very big in play) |

phlymo, as corny as it is, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and these lyrics are above average and set a scene very well in my opinion. I've heard this song is about Kate Moss, which adds up extremly well. she has a very bohemian drug girl post modern hippy thing about her, so "i danced around your folk and soul i danced to all your fucking soul" applies to her very well. I think, he is explaining how he did things her way, and she tried to form him into something he wasnt, which is why its past tense, it was short lasting. the lyrics are very self explanitory, Caleb is explaining his time spent with Kate Moss, and since they were always into coke etc. he never could get hard with her. "behind the fringe of a whiskey high mutilating cat like eyes and in your nose blood decadence you try to drag me into your bohemian dancing you paint my fingers and you paint my toes you let your perfect nipples show" that would just be another explanation of his time spent with her, and being "bohemian" shes comfortable with her body, which is where "you let your perfect nipples show" would apply since she is comfortable with herself, she wants Caleb to be comfortable with himself as well which is where "you paint my fingers and you paint my toes" applies. |

bleak_and_shattered, you know he was on acid for a fact because ? This song has meaning, every Modest Mouse song does This plane is definitely crashing This boat is obviously sinking This building's totally burning down And my, and my (a whole bunch) And my heart has slowly dried up The first 3 lines are about disentagration. the plane, the boat, and buliding all end up in pieces, leaving them a waste. nothing but destruction and decay, and the result of this is his heart. His heart dried up, the opposite of what happened to the plane, boat, and building, his heart shriveled while the above scattered. showing that their disasters, cuases him to feel weaker. what made them big and more spread, cuases his heart to become small and less able. all the lyrics come from a negative, pessimist point as do all the other MM songs, even "all float on" which is rumored to have a somewhat happier view then the rest, is only neutral, it basically says whatever happens, we'll get along with it, everything will equal out. the lyrics arent extremly positive, just neutral as are all the other lyrics neutral or negative. its sad because Modest Mouse's songs relate the closest to a realistic life than any other. |
