XTC – Dear God Lyrics 17 years ago
It's a beautiful song and always hits a chord; I think it's wonderfully brave lyrics to address it so directly. I've felt exactly this way, screaming in disbelief at G-d for what He's done, both at times when I've called myself atheist and at times I've called myself a believer.
I do have to agree with EnidCaulfield though, the song's clearly atheist.

I think greenherb's comment is interesting, that G-d is "something soft and cozy to hold on to"
G-d's anything but in the Bible.
I personally find the idea that there is a caring, comforting, benevolent force in the universe that hasn't quite taken over yet far more reconcilable than to think that the Source of Good spawned Evil on purpose -- that just makes me wanna hurl. I dreamt once that G-d and Satan were secretly good friends making sure everything went according to plan. What? It's just as ridiculous as the idea of G-d putting Satan in charge.
It makes me wanna explore the guts of what's happening in our world.
If good is the rating system we use as to how helpful something is to those with that system, then no wonder the precarious nature of it all. Sorry, rambling...

I'd like to put forth the crazy notion that believers and nonbelievers aren't as different as they, we, would like to ...uh, believe...
I think we all have questioned G-d. I do even now; in the same day question, nay hate the bs of religion and at the same time am quite sure there's some benevolent force trying to look out for us.
But the problem of evil is not unique to Judeo-Christian belief; it's just more glaring there.
Regardless your belief, the source of evil is by nature a paradox; by definition evil is what shouldn't be.

Yes – Owner Of A Lonely Heart Lyrics 17 years ago
When I was little listening to this song, it was easy to try to take it literally which was just confusing. I still remember the guy in the original video jumping off and turning into an eagle.
Hearing it now it sounds like someone repeating advice in their head, like 'put yourself out there,' but there is bitterness because it's so demanding "you're every move you make, so the story goes", so he doesn't and he stays "owner of a lonely heart" and tells himself "much better than a owner of a broken heart"
I remember being at an aspie meet, complaining how my heart keeps getting trampled on, and every fellow aspies in the room looked me square in the eye and said "I wish to God I could get that far, just to know what it's like to have my heart broken"
I want to tell them how bad it hurts, but I remember being in their shoes, wondering why no one even noticed I existed. Like the Eagle, spread your wings and fly best you can, and if your crash, try try again.

Crowded House – Don't Dream It's Over Lyrics 17 years ago
I loved the video too. I chant this to myself sometimes, trying to reassure myself, as my world keeps finding new ways to unravel. "Don't dream it's over"

To me, it reminds me of how I imagined having a happy family and it didn't happen.

Billy Idol – Dancing With Myself Lyrics 17 years ago
Sometimes, though lonely, I feel like people don't deserve my love. I'm waiting for someone to figure out I'm worth something but "they're empty eyes seem to pass me by" ...How long can you wait for your "love vibration" before throwing your hands up and saying get away from me losers! I like how he zaps himself/everyone in the video and they all fall away. Cathartic.

Those who know me know what the song meant to me.
I'll never get things back the way they used to be.

Jack Johnson – Flake Lyrics 17 years ago
Love this song, so mellow and sleepy. I'm with scratchy and DagoBoy, I think the song's about cheating and the pain around it. Both of them -- "I'm gonna have to lie too" Affairs never mean what you hope; You don't wanna break "other [real] ties" But in the end there are no real ties, only heartache, and after a while you get "so tired, so tired of trying" to make it work. You feel justified yet trapped, "like a tree…shall not move" And you get "so tired" of looking. You realize no one really commits to more than "maybe" loving you, and you know what that means -- no one is ever going to love you more than what it takes to string you along. The End

John Mayer – Belief Lyrics 17 years ago
This song means so much. Reminds me, not just of negative dogma of religion, philosophy -- but that every belief system puts itself above man, like we're subservient to memes that make us up, rather than the other way around. So much belief subverts that simple but oh-so-true (admittedly belief) popularized by the un-cola:
"Think what you think"
