This Providence – My Beautiful Rescue Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh, and P.S. the new version on The Bright Lights EP is everything the song needed that was missing in the self-title mix. I liked the first version, but really was blown away in the first few seconds of the remix the first time I heard it. I've probably listened to it 40 times in the past week alone.

For those that don't have it, The Bright Lights EP is their best work yet, in my opinion. I'd snag a copy ASAP!

"I think this song can be religious or not"

You're dead on, swimfreak - This Prov makes music that is most often religious in nature, but written such that it can be applied to human relationships as well, making it all the more poetic, complex, and accessable.

That's why they are amazing. :)

Mae – Mistakes We Knew We Were Making Lyrics 17 years ago
""What can now be said
Oh, little one on the other side
Dance until the band stops playing
Sing with all your might"

Honestly, even if he's stated that the pregnancy results in a child I don't believe it at all just because of these four lines."

Why? Why is that so hard to grasp? You're assuming Dave wrote the line "Oh, little one on the other side" as a metaphorical view of death and the afterlife. While I see that as a very valid and intuitive interpretation of the song (which I had as well, until I heard it wasn't about an abortion), I also thought it may have been simply "on the other side of her stomach." The doctor's visit is obviously one of two things: 1) to get a fool-proof pregnancy test or 2) to have an abortion.

"little one on the other side" is clearly a metaphor of the afterlife if it's number two, but if it's number one, than it's simply the "holy shit... there's a little one growing inside of you! WE'RE HAVING A KID?!" that nearly every guy thinks after a positive pregnancy test.

If Dave's in town again, I'll ask my buddy to clarify this (they grew up together - I don't know Dave personally).

This Providence – Sand In Your Shoes Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say this is about his girlfriend in Australia. This is the same girl he sings about in other songs, such as An Ocean Between.

Now, about the lyrics. These may have been the demo lyrics, or what he sang live, but they changed a little bit on The Bright Lights EP:

------------------------------------------

I couldn't stand to be in that place
I was just about to leave
When I saw your face
You were laughing at me
With your beautiful mouth
You said, "You're looking miserable.
Do you want to get out?"

When you're only 18
And you got nothing to lose
And your living a dream
With the sand in your shoes
(I said) Falling in love is easy
It's easy to do

We fell in love
With the windows rolled down
Chasing the sunset
Through another empty town
Your hair was a mess
When you would dance on the coast
Your silhouette
Like some heavenly ghost

When you're only 18
And you got nothing to lose
And your living a dream
With the sand in your shoes
(I said) Falling in love is easy
It's easy to do

Summer skies
And warm colored sunsets
And a sunrise
Sneaking through my blinds
My demise, I just can't help but feel so lost

Falling in love is easy to do
With the wind in your hair
And the sand in your shoes
And though it may hurt
To have your heart broken in two
That didn't stop me from falling for you

When you're only 18
And you got nothing to lose
And your living a dream
With the sand in your shoes
(I said) Falling in love is easy
It's easy to do

When you're dancing on the beach
Where the water meets your feet
And a cool ocean breeze
Is fighting the heat
(I said) Falling in love is easy
It's easy to do
It's easy to do
Oh, I'm falling for you

This Providence – Hopeless Lyrics 17 years ago
I believe our friend Dan here was once again writing about his thoughts of an inner battle he fights, between religion (in his mind, a relationship with Christ - speaking to him in the second person here) and musical success. Dan sees a problem with his ego, fueled by the high of performing live, clashing with his religious upbringing and beliefs of keeping humble.

"does it make you feel cold
to know that i would never die for you?"

Dan is basically calling himself a hypocrite here, or at least weak. He's asking Jesus, who he believes died for his sins, if he feels cold/disconnected that Dan wouldn't (or couldn't) do the same in return.

The mood of the song makes me wonder if Dan is losing his drive to write about these things (religion), as it has a sort of cynical heir to it - almost angry. By the lyrics, it seems as if "Hopeless" refers to his own fate, but paired with the music, it seems as if he may be calling the fight to stay religious hopeless.

I wonder which it is. Dan, are you out there, buddy? Shed some light for an old fan?

Mayday Parade – I'd Hate to Be You When People Find Out What This Song Is About Lyrics 17 years ago

Yeah... the ring is a guitar effect called a vibrato. There just jerking the string around and it makes that sound... and honestly, I don't think it sounds like a cell phone ring at all.
*****

You're half right. The pitch bending in there is definitely a vibrato, however the "ring" effect is actually a pinch harmonic. If you try to find that note on a guitar's fretboard, you'll notice you can't get in the same octave. :)

This song is my favorite by them so far, right above Three Cheers. The is a f***ing EPIC song, and the guitar in it is certainly top notch. I want to find out what scale he used for the solo. Though I can't play as fast as he gets at times, I absolutely love the close note-spacing!!

I have to meet these cats at some point!

The Spill Canvas – Lullaby Lyrics 17 years ago
"It's those pills that you don't need to take,
Medicating perfection, now that's a mistake."

He's referring to her popping pills. The girl has a bit of a drug problem, whether it be a simple overuse of pain pills, or something more serious, he throws this in there hoping she'd stop it, citing that somebody as perfect as her doesn't need to "medicate."

KillerDucky, it's actually about his wife, as are all of his songs. He speaks a lot to her about their relationship's troubles through his songs.

Secondhand Serenade – Stay close, Don't go Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about John's wife talking about leaving him because of his touring, and his pleading for her to stay with him.

Sadly... she left him.

Yellowcard – Paper Walls Lyrics 17 years ago
"Of stars in the sky and us down below
With streets and these coast lines
We kept this scene alive.

- My guess is the fact that they broke from the pact, got famous, and encourged other bands to do the same."

I actually believe Ryan's referring to pre-stardom there, as the song deals much with FL-life as opposed to Cali-life, and all the changes made in between.

"With stars in the sky and us down below" shows that they weren't "the stars" yet, but as they "kept the scene alive," they played their hearts out in the underground scene in smaller venues on the "streets."
