Cat Stevens – Wild World Lyrics 17 years ago
For me it's a father-daughter song. It's about the whole separation thing. It's about a daughter leaving the coop and chasing independence. Basically, she's going to try to make it on her own, breaking away from the ties that bind her with her parents.

The father can't help but worry because he knows how cruel the world can be. He also feels helpless because he knows his daughter's departure is inevitable and so he's giving out some important things for the girl to remember:
"I hope you have a lot of nice things to wear, but then a lot of nice things turn bad out there" -- if she's looking to gain financial independence, she must be wary not to fall in the trap of thinking that material things are the ones that matter most.
"I hope you make a lot of nice friends out there, but just remember there's a lot of bad and beware" -- he hopes that she'll find a great support group out there once she's out of their guidance and warns her that not all people whom you can call a 'friend' would always have the best intentions for you, so she better watch her back.

I love this song. It's a beautiful song, it's a wonderful mixture of a parent's love, hope, worries.. just the parent being human, worrying and ultimately just wanting the best for his child.

Switchfoot – Dare You To Move Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a great Christian song.
It dares everyone to move, to not be stagnant.
Everyone messes up, but Christ offers forgiveness, salvation.
He offers us a second chance, a chance to turn our lives around.
And now that we know this, what are we going to do with the redemption we received?
Share it.
And the song is daring us TO MOVE.
It won't be easy, as the song says,
"The tension is here
Between who you are and who you could be."
There would be a struggle between your old self and your new self.
But whatever struggles there are, the salvation you received and can share to others is much greater.
God is with us and He is far greater than anything.
He defeated death and He defeated sin, what more can we desire for?

Lemar – What About Love? Lyrics 17 years ago
It's hard to believe no one has commented on this song yet. This song is so full of emotions, it's sad at times but it's also so full of yearning and is very hopeful of love.

It's about lovers and I think they have had many problems which got them to the part where they thought that "hey, i don't think we can't work this out anymore."

There are people who want them apart and a lot of pressure and obstacles thrown in from outside parties. They got to the part where they are thinking of giving up the relationship, tired of defending and upholding what they have.

Somehow along the way they got distracted from what they were really about. People tell them things like what his or her partner lacks (not spending enough time with you, prioritizing career over you, etc) and somehow they got swayed by these suggestions from people and started thinking the same. Now all they see are faults. Hence, the making-up-for-it lines:
"What if I took my time to love you?
What if I put no one above you?
What if I did the things
That really mattered?
What if I ran through
Hoops of disaster?"

But after some time, one of them realizes that they shouldn't give up their relationship and the heck with everyone who wants them apart. Because really at the end of the day, it's just between the two of you.

He wants them to make it,
"I'll take the rivers rise
I'll take the happy times
I'll take the moments of disaster."

He reminds them both of the things that should count,
"What about love?
What about feeling?
What about all the things that make life worth living?
What about faith?
What about trust?
And tell me baby...what about us?"

Sting – Fields of Gold Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a beautiful song, it's always so nice to hear.

It's about lovers; in the fields of barley they had memorable times and are continuing and will continue to make lovely memories in their special place. I assume they eventually have children, and they also make memories with them in their special spot, "See the children run as the sun goes down, among the fields of gold."
And the line that says, "You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky" I think means that the sun kind of highlights everything as it is the sun that makes the barley turn or seem "golden" and the sky is jealous that it can't do the same.

Emilíana Torrini – Heartstopper Lyrics 17 years ago
"You said I began
This messy state of love affair"

I don't think it's referring to love/relationship per se. I think it's talking about a person's immersion and we might say obsession, with things that are unimportant and without direction. She is so unfocused that she considers her life's a mess.

Her predicament could include a directionless relationship, an obscure lover, aimless career, basically she's just so confused about everything else in her life. She drowns herself in temporary trappings like caffeine, alcohol, smoking, city life.

The interesting thing is that it's like she's finally aware of what she's doing and she wants out. She just have to figure out what to do and put direction back into her life.

"Outside your house
To make a scene
In my head you grabbed me passionately
But the lights are out
And in an hour I walked on home
In the pouring shower
Lost my keys in front of me
My neighbor's smile, he's handing me
The blackest coffee you will ever see
And my heart stopped beating"

It's a daily struggle, she thinks she kind of knows what to do next but daydreaming comes in the way. Then she tries to get back on track and she loses focus again, like when she said she lost her keys in front of her, and then another distraction is offered in front of her, communicated through her saying that the neighbor offered her the blackest coffee one can ever see.

When her heart stops beating I think it means she loses her zest in life, her focus, and can't seem to recall what she is passionate about. And in that lull she immerses herself.

But then again, let us not forget of the silver lining. That she's finally aware and hopefully she would want to get out. It's the "how to" part that's always hard.

She's a great singer, she has such an amazing connection to her listeners and there's so much emotion that is portrayed with the way she sings.

At times, I think I hear a combination of Bjork and Audrey Hepburn, honestly.

It's about a girl who wasn't ready to commit yet. She does have that picket fence dream with a husband, kids and all, but not just yet. And so she left her love.

She travelled and was gone for a long time, did all that she thinks are her heart's desires.

But eventually she got tired and things didn't make sense anymore. And what made sense to her now is to have her love back in her life. She's now ready and she's hoping the guy's still there, hence the letter.

Hopefully they'll meet on the Sunny Road.

Tom Waits – I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think that it was supposed to be taken literally, it happening in a bar and all.
It's about a man who's in love with a woman who's unfortunately attached. He's just there waiting in the wings and willing himself not to fall, he doesn't want to acknowledge his feelings but I think that the truth is he's already in love.
In the fourth stanza, we find out that the woman and her significant other has broken up.
