This after you have give up hope and realized the other person is too stubborn or prideful to try to save a once beautiful relationship. Its not worth the effort anymore. |

| Drive-By Truckers – Guitar Man Upstairs Lyrics

I appreciate the way the truckers write from others points of view as in this song and the Buford Stick stateline gang narrarator and Loaded Gun in the Closet couple. You just know young smart ass Cooley had the law called on him by a feeble old man quite a few times. I just wonder if Cooley speculated about why the old guy was so angry or he was told the story about his wife messing around with a quick walking guitar picker? |

| Drive-By Truckers – One of These Days Lyrics

Cooley's dad may worked for the once huge Robbins Tire & Rubber in the Shoals. When a person leaves a home to scratch with the chickens he may see things which might mark him for life. I left the Shoals to live in Memphis in the late 80s and yes it was a hell right here on earth. Birmingham is almost as bad as Mempho. But back home, the west side probably refers to the rough side of Florence, Alabama. |

Inspired Patterson by seeing all those old ARS road cases in the various pawn shops and music stores around Athens and Atlanta. ARS is the Atlanta Rhythm Section to all you young ones. There were big in the day. |

| Drive-By Truckers – The Day John Henry Died Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
In the last verse, Isbell is akin to a modern day guitar slinging John Henry, both using unique skills they were born with. He feels like just a cog in the wheels of the music industry to be used until broken then replaced. But if he don't bust his ass flying to L.A.(or anywhere else a long distance from home) with no rest in sight, then some other bastard will.
John Henry and Isbell both know its futile to fight the man but are compelled to do it anyway. Free will? To some extent. But fighting the man on the way out makes for a great tale. |

MikeLadner, I do recall the Tom T. Hall song "A week in the County Jail" with Judge not being impressed with who ol' T. was makes much more sense than the T for Trojan I proposed. Thanks for figuring that line out. Cooley was on his game in this song.

| Drive-By Truckers – Space City Lyrics

Looking east from Florence, Alabama and about an hours drive, you can see the big white light from Huntsville a.k.a. Space City. Really bright with a raising full moon.
A lonely man in a big empty house missing his wife who has passed on. He keeps her grave stone clean and wishes he could join her in heaven.
I think the third verse refers to using his hands proudly for hard work but never striking or hitting his deceased wife. Now he is ashamed for hurting her with words which were just as bad as beating her. |

I guess even if some folks suspects Bob might be light in the loafers, so what. Minds his own business, fishes, looks after his momma, goes to church. You ain't got to screw women to be a good ol' boy now days. Don't believe the hype, the South is progressing. |

"T" is a Trojan. The dude needed a quarter but only had 3 dimes for a gas station condom machine.
Thinking back on good ol' days and what might have happened if he only had that damn quarter. Note Bob Seger song reference at end. |

| Drive-By Truckers – Zip City Lyrics

Salem Church of Christ is located in Zip City in Lauderdale County & Colbert Heights and Reynolds Aluminum plant is/was in Colbert County.
The parents in this song seem like hard working, old fashioned, country folks who have raised a couple of screwed up kids. The Deacon knows what the older narrators plan is with his younger daughter, probably why he married his old lady. Hell, a young man expects a gal to put out if he's dropping that kind of coin on gas.
The 17 yr old narrator's mind is smarter and more devious than the others, if the average bear gets in them drawers he would be stuck in Zip City forever playing the good guy. But not this dude with a 305 engine with no good intentions. |
