Lupe Fiasco – Switch (The Science Project) Lyrics 17 years ago
Before I start id like to point out.. its how i interpret the song. Not how the song explicitly means.

Lupe's Switch has 3 parts to it, the hustler, the worker and the more obscure, mediator. Now Lupe starts off by setting up his "experiment" his first verse;

"You, you, you, yes, let the words rule you
till you woozy, let the lyrics subdue you,
Massage and soothe you, move you
Till consciousness lose you, Moulin Rouge you,
Do what Lu do, and you'll do beautiful
Switch!"

is directed at the listener makes them listen deeply into the technicalities of the song. As obvious as it may seem, Lupe wants to grab ur attention and does so but making you listen to the intricate lyrics. Whilst it seems to have no basis in the experiment, it actually has similarities to a hypnotist. It suggests that you loose consciousness, where you are unable to control yourself.

This leads to the next part, Lupe as the "scientist" conducts the "experiment" on two people, and dictates or forces them to imagine the hypothetical description of themselves. First he hustler, implanting the image that the person is a hustler;

"I'm a hustler, creepin' with my hat low,
Niggas know I'm packed so, what they go do that fo'?
Niggas got my back, though, like answering the back door,
Catch you, I'ma slap you, leave you redder than the back fo,
Switch!"

Next he uses the same technique to create the polar opposite;

"Heal niggas, educate and build niggas,
Instill in niggas it's real to respect women
Treat them like they real, they feel nigga,
Watch the birds, watch Dr. Phil nigga,
Chill nigga, go learn a skill nigga.
Switch!"

He further solidifies the differnces using the consequences of each type of person.

"Rims, Mercedez Benz, 20s, 22s, 24s,
Rolls, gold, platinum watches, cases, and mo',
Gucci, rubies, mansions, models, VIP, Ferraris
chinchillas, diamond rings, chains,
Rangerovers, bling bling.
Switch!

Nigga bust his trains, pockets full of change,
Dimes, quarters taking orders, delivering pizzas,
Air conditioners, beaters, hand-me-down sneakers silver,
Wannabe models won't show me love, and I can't get in the club.
Switch!"

The final section is left to you, it implies the, "now you've seen it, you choose" mentality. it makes you answer which way you'd decide. Either way Lupe points out the flaws in deciding on either side.

Metaphorically, Lupe's switch, makes you realise that a balance is needed for an individual life. A choice to one side can be easily countered by something similarly as simple as the choice.
