So to all these people who are saying it's about hookers (with a penis, sorry I just had to say it), astrology, and parasites that's just simply not true. Here is what Maynard tells the Phoenix crowd on April 6, 2000. "I was in this one relationship with a person who was so terrified to show me who they really were that she basically acted, or slept her way through, nine months of the relationship and then just disappeared and I kinda wrote these words to kinda work through that hopefully someday she would hear it, get it. So as it turns out she calls me after a year of being completely gone. Heard the record, loves it! Just didn't get it, isn't that ironic?" |

| I absolutely loved With Teeth, I thought it was probably the best album Reznor could have written after quitting drugs. Ever since then I have been disappointed with Year Zero, Ghosts I-IV, and now this song. I feel he's lost his touch with his past creativity and the new music has been taking it's toll on him. I believe he kind of addresses this in this song. It sounds like he's questioning whether to get back into drugs to rejuvenate his mind (And now it's starting up, feels like I'm losing touch, nothing matters to me, nothing matters as much). Personally I would love to see him create another "The Fragile" while staying clean but I just don't see that happening. Still an amazing musician in my book nevertheless. | |

I have to agree with littleviolette for the most part. But were I differ is that like what a couple of other people think is that she had commited suicide with the whole "she's not at work, she's not at school, she's not in bed, i think i finally broke her". It makes me think he had cheated on her at least once, if not many times. I like the whole rate-your-boyfriend idea for the 7 9's and 10's (which can signify to him that even though he cheated, she still loved him). It could have been used as I guess a suicide note to show him that she thought the world of him, but was tired of it all. The line "i bring home everything i want, nothing that she needs" sounds like that he bought her things to make up for the lack of support in their relationship and to try and trick each other's love for each other through a materialistic way in which both don't believe is truly working. "i thought she'd be there holding daisies, she always waits for me" sounds like to me that he was expecting it to be a normal night and was greatly mistaken. It shows to me at least that he honestly cared inside and had always anticipated to see her once he arrived home. "she thinks she missed the train to mars, she's out back counting stars" - I believe she knows the flame is gone and becomes greatly saddened. She can't handle it and ends up passing onto the other side. If you know anything about Hum they were a huge space-themed band, which explains using Mars and Stars as metaphors. I think that was their own kooky/beautiful twist to the song. One of the greatest songs of all-time in my book. |
