I think the final verse "but in reality, she doesn't even know me" could also be taken to mean that he is dreaming of love - in its purest sense - for that future someone he has yet to meet and experience those fantasies with. His dreams are focused on feelings of love throughout life, not necessarily with a particular person, especially given the spiritual nature of his yearnings made clear in the third verse. Or these fantasies could even be sarcastic ruminations on the nature of love itself. That those perfect little moments only exist in our imaginations, and not in real life (or if they do, they're imagined, and something sinister is brewing in the background). Too cynical for The Temptations? Perhaps. Too cynical for late 60s/early 70s? Not at all. |
