I think Sam looks upon Leonard as an idol. He was a famous singer-songwriter, musican, poet, and novelist. I also found this excerpt from Wikipedia that might explain the reference that you were inquiring about :
2005 bankruptcy
"On 8 October 2005, Cohen alleged that his longtime former manager, Kelley Lynch, misappropriated over US $5 million from Cohen's retirement fund leaving only $150,000.[36] Cohen was sued in turn by other former business associates.[36] These events placed him in the public spotlight, including a cover feature on him with the headline "Devastated!" in Canada's Maclean's magazine.[37] In March 2006, Cohen won the civil suit and was awarded US $9 million by a Los Angeles County superior court. Lynch, however, ignored the suit and did not respond to a subpoena issued for her financial records.[38] As a result it has been widely reported that Cohen may never be able to collect the awarded amount.[39] In 2007, U.S. District Judge Lewis T. Babcock dismissed a claim by Cohen for more than US $4.5 million against Colorado investment firm Agile Group, and in 2008 he dismissed a defamation suit that Agile Group filed against Cohen.[40] Cohen has been under new management since April 2005."
The line, 'Beware of those who might steal from you', makes sense given the financial loss Leonard sustained at the hands of his former manager......5 million US dollars is a lot to have taken from you, even by today's standards. |

No, the lines are not mixed up. Lake Ontario is lower than the rest of the Great Lakes. Lake Erie, in particular, is above the Niagara Escarpment, whereas Lake Ontario is below the Niagara Escarpment......Therefore, the Erie River flows downwards to Lake Ontario. Hence, the lyrics are geographically correct. |

Just a guess here, but after seeing the video, I came to the conclusion that the vid was about one who was taken in by temptation, and when one is taken into temptation that one can't resist, and therefore gives in to it, it leads one to a place where they are taken advantage of, or 'eaten', if you will. I believe the video corresponds well with the lyrics. But that's just me. :) |

| Paul Brandt – The Sycamore Tree Lyrics

I believe that, in the beginning of the song, the boy's mother dies due to complications during childbirth, for which his father never forgave him. When he says, high above the guilt and pain, I think it's meaning is that his father always made him feel guilty and blamed him, as though it was his fault that she was gone, and the pain that the boy must have felt to have neither mother nor father (because his father resented him) to care for him. In the strong arms of the sycamore tree was where he felt cared for and protected. |
