Nickel Creek – Reasons Why Lyrics 14 years ago
Some people have commented that it's not a religious song. There are a lot of clues that point that the song is directed at God.

"Quiet Steps away from YOUR LEAD"
Who is leading this person?

"Feeling this short of a LOVE we once knew"
Who is a leader that this person loves?

"We lean another ladder..... and climb... to the highest rung to shake fists at the sky"
Who is in the sky? Why do you have to get so high on a latter to shake your fist?

"Its hard not to wander away"
Who is wandering away from who?

God answers all these questions.

"[God], where am I today? I wish that I knew, 'cause looking around there's no sign of you"

So this person has wandered away from God, in short steps that added up over time. Because of that they are clutching a heart they want to give away, they don't feel the love, they don't feel at home. Live is like an act and they are the star, playing on a darkened stage stumbling around through the lines.

So it's cause and effect. Why is their life so hard? Because they left God. That's the reason why... Other's may think their life is in bad shape because this bad thing happened, or that bad luck stopped them. But this person says the reason is because they left God.

The second verse talks about the reasons people have for the pain in their lives. The distractions, broken dreams, loneliness is blamed on the wrong thing... that is, they think their circumstances are to blame. They don't realize it's their lack of having God in their life is the real "reason why."

So, others have excuses for their problems (circumstances, etc.) but her reason's why is her distance from God.

The song also points out, right before the bridge that people climb up on the ladder to shake their fists at God. It's like they end up blaming God for their circumstances... but that's wrong, because the reason for the circumstances is their distance from God... so it's a ladder leaning on the wrong wall.

The bridge sum it all up. With all this deception about what the real "reason why" is, it's hard not to wander away (and there by end up shaking your fist at God)

Nickel Creek – The Lighthouse's Tale Lyrics 17 years ago
When ever I listen to this song, I always felt something deeper than what the story was telling. And I think I know what it is.

The lighthouse is telling us this story about his keeper who loses his wife and then kills himself to be with her. And obviously the lighthouse misses them both. That's the obvious part.

Here's the deeper part(I think anyway):

It is the lighthouse's job to warn the ships at sea of the rocks. It is also it's job to be shelter for the keeper. And this lighthouse "failed"(for lack of a better word) at it's job on both fronts. Even though it warned the ship the wife was on, it still was dashed against the very rocks it warned others about.

Instead of being a safe shelter, he became a plank for the keeper who ran off his edge.

So even though the lighthouse tried to do everything right, he still lost the keeper and his wife. Then every night he is reminded of how he lost them because of the weather.

By the end of the song, he is empty and alone, warning sailors of the rocks that devastated his joy. It is as if he can help others, but not himself.

Nickel Creek – When in Rome Lyrics 17 years ago
The saying "when in rome" ends with "act roman." Back in the roman empire, if you weren't roman you were looked down on. So that is where the saying came from. When in rome, act roman.

This song takes that idea and applies it to modern life. Rome is this world as a whole. The song touches on how we don't make wise decisions, how we burn knowledge for a bonfire party, and how we make each other sick by our own bad habits.

Then it poses the question about the afterlife. If we spent all our life learning how to live in in this world ( aka rome ) for our entire lives, will we fit in with those in the afterlife? Will we be worthy of what is on the other side when we act the way we do?
