I have to confess that the video of this song clarifies best. I just came to watch it. If we attach to the video, the explanation comes easier. First, there is an actual deceit and this came from her (there is an scene where she is seen coming down the stairs while buttoning her shirt). This deceit is accompanied with new feelings to someone else. I think that when he says "some things look better baby just passing through" perhaps he means something like "should you have just a slight romance, I could have let it pass, but not like you have done: a profound outbound relationship" (it is my impression). Then, he broadly states that fidelity should not be read as sacrifice when there is love in between. I think that with this reading, the story end in the fifth paragraph, where it is said that sensitivity builds a prison in the final act, where this could only mean that at the end, after being separated, she realized what she had lost and how much she missed him; by that time, he had already forgotten about her already. The sixth paragraph could be an explanation of his feelings before he broke up. I think that I have made too many interpretations, enough to be blogged out from here. Sorry... |

In about minutes, I found another possible reading. Perhaps, first and second paragraph only describe the fact that men are tempted when things go wrong. However, difference lies in the third paragraph and on. What if the singer is singing this song to his "other woman". Think about. He says that this outbound relationship makes him conduct cold; he explains to her that is much better to keep informal only, not anything else. He must be cold, he cannot express anything that could be interpreted as "sacrifice", because there is no sacrifice among strangers, among two different universes. However, this is not likewise understood by her. At the end - final act - she finds herself trapped in sensibility; she has feeling about him. Finally, it is impossible to make understand that it is better to keep it informal, but it is too late: she is already jealous about the "spouse". And the thing is that she cannot expect tears to wash her burning (the jealousy), because he will not cry, he must keep cold. This is totally different interpretation that assumes the song is addressed to the other woman. I hope I am wrong!!! |

I have this possible explanation which concurs with some below. This song entails an actual married couple. Some unexplained difficulty which he encounters - perhaps usual problems in marriage - made him recall a past but still vivid love that in its moment touched him by hurting quite much, enough to make him hitherto cold and not easily to crack. Then he thinks of himself - he tries to convince himself - to be sufficiently strong to avoid temptation, enough to pass her by without being actually attracted to her (whether if this attraction is provoked by her or not); actually, he attributes this current coldness to her, it was her who made him cold somehow; therefore he thinks that avoiding her does not really entail a sacrifice, in fact, he thinks, how could it be a sacrifice to avoid her if in general terms both of them are not related to anything (here again, he tries to convince himself that she no longer remains in him as a strong feeling). However - and this is the human sign- despite the strong he tries to think of himself, despite the cold he pretends to be, the truth is that her presence is still strong, and suddenly it is too strong to keep it hide in front of his wife. Then, wife and husband face struggle because she discovers ("after the fact" entails a meaning of discovery) that he has striven to keep this foreign feeling unclosed: she discovers that he is in fact a prisoner of this prior but remaining love (this is the final act, the crude reality his condition of being still trapped of this prior love). After this recognition, no longer unclosed - no stone unturned - relationship in in trouble, and, it does not matter how many tears he bursts, she will not be moved, because the jealousy she feels now is just too strong to easily vanish. And there is nothing she or he could have done to avoid it. this reveals the humanity of the sign of being defeated by prior but not buried loves. |
