I always thought it was:
They
All abhor
And subvert
All that matters much to me

Death – Lack Of Comprehension Lyrics 17 years ago
Also, I think the whole "Not understanding metal" thing was him being tongue in cheek or something because I don't see how that explanation goes well with the actual lyrics. I think that was just Chuck Schuldiner's way of riding poff that question cuse he probably didn't rreally wanna answer it. (Probably because he wants us to interperate it for ourselves maybe?) I just don't think that was his real meaning that he made for it.

And it's probably the same thing with whoever Maynard's singing about.

Tool – Crawl Away Lyrics 17 years ago
And as for the "You dont wanna play" part , he's saying "You dont wanna keep up this kinda shit that keeps going on anymore" And the whole "What you want and what you need, dont mean that much to mee" part... well, like I said, with MY situation it was because they didn't fully recognize MY needs or fully consider them often, especially when MY needs were in conflict with THEIR impulsive behaviours and emotional and psychological wants and needs! So they SELFISHLY acted in controlling and emotionally/psychologically harmful actions/behaviours in order to fulfill THEIR wants and needs! Even if it did harm to me and MY well being, even though they loved me! (Selfish love, like that other person mentioned earlier)

Tool – Crawl Away Lyrics 17 years ago
This song reminds of the relationship I have with my parents... there were A LOT of control issues between people in my house, growing up, and whenever I tried to escape and disconnect from it all, they'd go to extremes to keep me from being able to disconnect from them! This caused a lot of adverse psychological and social problems for me for a long while. (and to some extent, even today) and I would become very asocial and reclusive in order to disconnect from everyone so I could get the peace of mind I needed growing up. Because my parents would do many extreme and even emotionally destructive ends in order to keep me from doing so (because MY needs didn't seem to fully wiegh in on them because THEIR needs for control and emotional release impulsively came to them the STRONGEST!). The song doesn't just have to be about the feelings between two romantic relationships, it could be about other kinds of things too! And as for the "Crawled away" part... well, if the relationship is abusive and controlling (Which it is!) then someone would have totry to crawl away from it because they'd be "Wounded" so to speak AND because the abusive person is trying to keep them down and in order to get out of the hold of someone trying to keep you held down, I get this picture in my head of somebody crawling away while somebiody tries to hold them by the legs. And that other person (The abused) is slowly trying to crawl out of their grasp! As for the crept and slid part, well, when I was in MY house as a kid, I was like freakin Solid Snake when it came came to sneaking past people to keep from interacting with them! I would hide behind walls, watch their patterns of where they were going in order to sneak by them, and quietly sneak behind them while they were walking to a room in front of the room I was trying to get to... ALL IN ORDER TO AVOID INTERACTING WITH THEM!!! When you're in a relationship with people who are controlling and abusive, sometimes the easiest way out of it is to get away quietly and unnoticed so they can't try and stop you from not being there... That's how it worked for me!

Death – Lack Of Comprehension Lyrics 17 years ago
Also, I'd like to point out something that happened after the Virginia Tech massacre: After all those people were killed, lots of people (especially Republicans) would say things like: "Well I'm not saying I don't care that they were killed, but they should've been able to fight back! Why didn't they fight back?! If they ALL had guns, this wouldn't have been able to happen!" Ya'see, after the massacre, they felt like their collective desicions on local gun laws were gonna come under attack, and so they defended it and JUSTIFIED their decisions by BLAMING the victims UNFAIRLY! And that's how human nature ALWAS seems to work! I deal with the same injustcice (But on a MUCH smaller and less significant scale, kinda like a microcosm, if you will) from our skewed and dysfunctional Florida education system, being learning disabled and dealing with ALL KINDS of crap that other people don't have to deal with! When a teacher gets lazy and decides not to read their students' IEP's they come up with a "One size fits all" education plan for dealing with the students in their classroom! and then they JUSTIFY themselves by saying "I don't give you the grade YOU GIVE YOURSELVES the grade!" which is BULLSHIT! Then, when our learning disabled class (I go to a school for students with learning diasabilities) doesn't do well with this system, does she TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for HER PART in the situation?! HELL NO! She calls us "Lazy" and says that we don't have learning disabilities but that we have "Learned helplessness" and that WE need to take the responsibility for OUR actions! And we, feeling angry and unfairly judged, as well as unjustly treated, ask "Why then, if we don't really have learning disabilities, does this school for the LEARNING disabled even EXIST?!" and then they defend themselves by pointing out our social progress that we made THERE that we wouldn't have made at a public school, and that we HAVE benefitted from the school, giving a reason to feel uncomfortable with tslking to state officials or complaining to local media about our problems for fear that if the school lost funding, then there'd be NO OTHER CHOICE but public school for the learning disabled and they don't want to lose whatever benefits they WERE getting from the school! And then they pull rank on us and try to blame us for our problems without taking ANY responsibity for THIER PART and THEIR CONTRIBUTION in the lack of benefit for our collective and personal educational interests. I think it's a microcosm kind of. Y'see, people do the same thing on a MUCH LARGER and MORE SIGNIFICANT scale. Whenever they support a policy, cause, action, or organization that causes injustice to others, they do the same thing as when they PERSONALLY cause injustice to others. They shift blame, judge, excuse, and hide from responsibility. There is a LACK OF COMPREHENSION as to the negative effects and consequenses of THEIR OWN actions and/or decisions! I think this song imlies a recognition of this kind of behaviour in people for the responsibility of their own decisions! Or at least that could be ONE interperetation for the lyrical meaning for this song! Sorry for the long post, I just felt the need to explain my logic as to my explanation and interpereatation for the lyrics. So you could understand where I'm comin from with the interperatation of the lyrics.

Death – Lack Of Comprehension Lyrics 17 years ago
It can be interperated in MANY ways! That's one of the artistic beuties of this song! I'm gonna make my OWN interperetation and say that it could also be interperted to be about people who support a war, or organization, or decision made by the public that causes unjust death of other humans! For instance, they could be supporting an unjust war that kills MILLIONS and justifying it with excuses in order to drown out the guilt associated with supporting such an unjust war! Also, People blame the victims of Katrina for the destruction of their livelihood by labeling them as "Lazy" and say they were "Waiting for handouts" as an excuse for the guilt of supporting such an incompetent government! And for helping build an UNJUST and INCOMPETENT system! I think it's about recognizing when people mask their guilt and avoid personal responsibility for the injustice caused to others by justifying that injustice with excuses and unfair judgments on others and especially on the victims who were unjustly treated!

Nevermore – Optimist Or Pessimist Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think he's a communist! I think he's just trying to say that he's more of an optimistic because he believes that there's hope, and he believes that as long as you understand WHY things are bad, you can fix it. But he's saying that it's hard not to turn into a pessimist and just give up on the world. Personally, I'm a pessimist. But he sees things different. But he can see how you can be pessimistic, too, but he's decided to be an optimist and TRY to change things for the better. And he seems to believe tat as long as we fix what's wrong with oursleves, we'll fix our problems. Personally, I don't think we CAN change what's wrong with us as a race. It's just two different ways to see it and he chooses to be optimistic about it.

Nevermore – The Lotus Eaters Lyrics 17 years ago
In Greek mythpology, the lotus eaters were a group of people who ate the white lotus. White lotus would pacify them and put them in a euphoric state. They, in turn, would become addicted to it. In the Odysee, Oddyseus had to try and keep his men from even going near the island, because the stuff was so powerful that one try got you hooked forever. He's trying to draw a connection between the Lotus Eaters of Greek mythology and religion. Religion is like an opiate that keeps people pacified and narcoticized. Just like the White Lotus of Greek Mythology.
