Beirut – Cherbourg Lyrics 16 years ago
As most of you have mentioned, this song is most definitely a continuation of "Nantes."

It is a gorgeous song about loneliness and despair.
He obviously wants to make this clear if he dedicated two songs to this point. He mentions "it is a long way down," probably referring/reflecting on the time that has passed between him and this person he misses. He misses someone's (a lover's perhaps?) smile. And he has taken up the habit of gambling and drinking. Overall he's depressed. He says he will "lead the way" indicating that he will do anything to get that smile back.

The music is beautiful too. I love the accordion and the ambient trumpet in the background. It gives a very sad and eerie feeling to the tune.

It's "left a grave to admire"

Beirut – My Night With the Prostitute from Marseille Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is really deep for a song with few words and a simple tune.I usually don't like electronic tunes, but it's definitely appropriate here.

I like the intimacy between the prostitute being referenced to and "I."

It's on March of the Zapotec/Holland double EP by the way.

I like this song, but their voices are drained out due to the music, idk if that's intentional or not...

Voxtrot – Long Haul Lyrics 17 years ago
I interpreted this song ore on a day-to-day aspect rather than a relationship. It seems he wants to be able to love life for what it is. He can't grasp the beauty that is supposed to be in life, he want it all to come together, and it's not, so he's feeling as if life is just one "Long Haul."

The Smashing Pumpkins – Ava Adore Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is realistic, it brings in all the different aspects of the relationship, the god and the bad, as well as the grey area. You hardly see songs this true. It's always either miserable (ie-Morrisey, from the Smiths, or solo) or rediculously happy (ie-"Jogging Gorgeous Summer" by Islands). It's nice to see a song that ACTUALLY reflects life.

Islands – Jogging Gorgeous Summer Lyrics 17 years ago
I was reading a interview with Nick when Pitchfork interviewed him, and he said how he got the name of the song when he went back to visit the house he grew up in, and he discovered these words carved in his sisters room.
This song is very pretty, and shows a lot of love. My only problem with tis, is that it is completely unrealistic, no relationship is made up of this, yes there are moments, but this is way to fantasized and romanticized.

Iron & Wine – Resurrection Fern Lyrics 17 years ago
This is an extremely sentimental and intimate song. This song reminds me of "Naked As We Came" also by Iron & Wine. It is a song of one of two lovers describing the relationship, and expressing their love. It is very powerful, and beautiful. Sam certainly does have a knack for lyrical poetry. I would imagine that this is a personally driven song. anyway, i agree with indiediane, that this song gives you goosebumps, but instead this song makes me tear, and i don't do that, ha-ha.

Andrew Bird – The Naming of Things Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a great song, but if you pay attention to the lyrics, the verses are incredibly depressing. He is saying how "you" were not there, and how "you" made a mess. In the chorus, he says he is impressed, but with what? Is he impressed with "you", the person, or what "you" did? He says "despite all the mess and the broken glass." So we have to infer that it is not about what "you" did. He leaves many loose ends in his music, open for interpretation, which is wonderful.
Andrew Bird is my favorite singer-songwriter hand down, but we, as the listeners and appreciators, must think outside the box with his music.

Beirut – Postcards from Italy Lyrics 17 years ago
Simply put, I believe that this song has the straight forward theme of one should look for the best in life, because it is there. Take advantage of the gifts the world has given us, humanity, as a whole, is cruel, but loved ones are not, and nature is not. It is a very Transcendentalist theme.

Andrew Bird – Cataracts Lyrics 17 years ago
First of all, I would like to say that this song is beautiful. As peopledontdance said nicely "you want your music to be as sad as you are" is so true. Andy has always wrote very touching and interesting songs, but this, for some reason or another, hits the bottom of the listeners heart.
I believe that this song, as a whole, is meant to portray one's life in this cruel word. he is trying to say that, as humans, we do not live particularly great lives, tahat we must understand that. We constantly have others telling us to do something or another, trying to manipulate us to believe whatever the other person does. The idea with the cat is that there is beauty in this world, all we have to do is search for it and hold on to it, keep it in ours eyes as long as we can.

Elvis Perkins in Dearland – May day! Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a great song, and I'm sure that it, as well as all of his songs, was influenced by his unfortunate past. However, the song is called "May Day!" which is a holiday in remembrance to the working class, and to equality formed in the US. So, I believe that this song vaguely portrays Elvis' beliefs on that subject, but I have not been able to figure that out yet, it's a very indirect song, with a bunch of loose ties.
